Thoughts on Marsch ball after first game. It's very high energy. I think Roca and Rodrigo got subbed because they were knackered.
That obviously ties into why Marsch likes to rotate players. I'm sure tactics will be more high energy now given the 5 subs rule.
For some reason there are some fans who don't seem to realise that Marsch uses a style of play which is quite similar to Bielsa's - but with modifications such as zonal marking and less use of the wings. Plus the use of two DMs. However it's still the same high energy game with a lot of running and a lot of pressing, plus the FBs bombing forward whenever possible - which at times creates the same vulnerabilities as under the previous manager.
It's amusing to hear some people voice concerns about the FBs getting caught high up the field, when it's no different to what happened under Bielsa's tenure. However the zonal marking makes the team generally less vulnerable defensively - even though IMO we have CBs who are not quite good enough at this level. Haaland versus Llorente will be interesting....

A man versus a boy I would think...
Rotation is an obvious necessity when you are asking players to expend so much energy, but the previous manager couldn't see that, nor the defensive weaknesses caused by man marking. IMO Jesse has taken the positive aspects of a high energy, high pressing game and modified it to make it far more pragmatic and less gung ho. Just look at how many goals we have conceded since he took over compared to the average conceded in the season up to when Marsch was appointed.

Leeds still run a lot. They still press with intensity and are at their best when games are stretched and cluttered. But they have ditched certain principles, like the man-for-man defending. "
