Albums which take several listens to grow into the mood and the songwriting could be overlooked. Similarly, first impressions can be misleading, eg if you just blast a few riffs of Ekhidna without listening to the whole thing, you're missing out on the variety and complexity of the music. That's the downside of having too much choice, or not enough time.
Even a few bars is enough...if I'm uncertain I'll continue (I did that with Hackdepiocotto) But if I put a new album to me on and I get generic, sounds like 30 other bands and you didn't grab me with something then bye

Take the Strokes, if your a fan already you're gonna like it... or not, your choice. If your not a fan then the new album ain't gonna convince you. It's more of the same for the most part ..

I do agree with you, some of my favourite albums have taken 7 or 8 listens before they grab me

John in Louisiana wrote: ↑Sat Feb 06, 2021 3:41 pm So many great albums; it's going to be a tough choice.

Empty Glass (Townshend), Seventeen Seconds (Cure), Black Sea (XTC), Get Happy (Costello), Remain in Light (Talking Heads)....

And that's just off the top of my head.
Some good uns there, John.

It's going to be difficult choosing. Some terrific records. Off the top of my head:
Killing Joke - Killing Joke
Dexy's - Young Soul Rebels
Joy Division - Closer
Bowie - Scary Monsters
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit
The Clash - Sandinista!
Mikey Dread - World War III
Augustus Pablo - Rockers Meets King Tubby Firehouse
Gary Numan - Telekon
The Beat - I Just Can't Stop It
Kate Bush - Never Forever

Thanks Durly, two of our favourite albums of all-time.

Music fans slag off the wonderful 'Sandinista' a album released after their brilliant 'London Calling' masterpiece however at that time they were clearly more than just a punk outfit, a band who refused to stand still showing such versatility.

As for Kate what more can you say about our most prolific singer/songwriter? an exceptional talent.

I love Sandinista. It has its "filler" admittedly but it's a top album and still one I listen to on a regular basis. Some proper gems on there. I prefer London Calling but that is no disrespect to Sandinista, as LC is one of, if the not THE greatest album ever made, in my opinion.
What I love about both records is the huge variety of musical influences that The Clash were working with. Great works both.

I'm also glad the Clash and Kate albums have been chosen, as that's 2 off my huge shortlist. :)

Joy Division - Closer

Funny. Rolling Stone put London Calling at #1 but was released in December 1979
