The longer we pander to these people , the longer they will do stupid things, as Hector says, a substantial jail sentence will be a good start.

Cops stood by and watched it happen, they said they were powerless to do anything because they couldn’t ID the culprit.

I'm all for freedom of speech, and of the press, and of the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. If those word sound familiar it's because they are enshrined in the Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution. It is, or was, a deeply held core value for virtually all Americans.

But that's NOT what this is. This is Eco-terrorism. And it needs to be dealt with swiftly and harshly. Tresspassing, destruction of property, blocking traffic, etc. None of this meets the legal standard. It's time that Governments cracked down on it.
