Here's an owner owning the situation and actually being in the country.

Compare that statement to ours.

Leicester City didn’t see their relegation coming until it was too late

How on earth did this happen? How did Leicester City, who won the Premier League title just seven years ago, lifted the FA Cup at Wembley two years ago, and were in a European semi-final only 12 months ago, end up back in the Championship?

Perhaps it is the stunning speed of that decline that meant there was a numbness when the final whistle went at the King Power Stadium on Sunday, a 2-1 win over West Ham United proving too little, too late to stave off a relegation that the club did not see coming until there was not enough time left to avert it. There was a smattering of boos and some applause for the players, many of whom will certainly not be at the club next season when they kick off in the Championship.

Even by Leicester’s standards, this has been an astonishing development and it is a cautionary tale for similar-sized clubs who chase the dream while ignoring reality until it is too late.

Usually, when a club is relegated, its fans can point to a lack of ambition or interest from their owners and management. The opposite is true at Leicester.

They have aspired to challenge the “Big Six”, disrupt the established elite of English football, and eventually close the gap and claim a seat alongside them at the top table. By and large, they have done that. They have claimed two top-five finishes and became one of only seven clubs to actually lift the Premier League trophy.

'The most expensive squad to be relegated'

On the surface, Leicester may appear to be in a decent position to make an immediate return to the Premier League.

Playmaker Maddison - the club's crown jewel - and £60m-rated winger Harvey Barnes are expected to leave, but should fetch a fair price.

The 'parachute payments' that follow relegation will boost the coffers too, so they are set to bounce straight back up, right? Wrong.

If Leicester's search for Rodgers' replacement was farcical, the lack of a plan for their players makes for even worse reading.

Seven are out of contract in June, including internationals Youri Tielemans and Caglar Soyuncu, who would have commanded significant transfer fees if sold last summer.

Deals for a further eight players expire next year and, with cuts of up to 50% written into contracts should the club be relegated, there is likely be a huge overhaul of the staff.

Leicester's wage bill stands at £180m - the highest outside the top six - with Maddison, Jamie Vardy and Ricardo Pereira among a number of players to earn in excess of £100,000 a week.

Losing Peter Schmichel was pivotal to their decline, always a thorn in the side for the opposition.

128 goals in seven seasons for Jamie Vardy, only three Premier League goals for their ageing striker in 2022/23.

Only one point gained in their first seven games, with just one victory in their first 10 matches.

Not much activity in their transfer windows.

Unsure where Brendan Rodgers went wrong, was it lack of support, or was there just a lapse in his managerial skills?

Dean Smith was an uninspiring appointment.

Failure to make any signings, along with the loss of Schmeichel killed them really.

Unless they do something radical, like keeping the likes of Maddison and Barnes, I see them staying down for a few seasons.

Agree Kev, there is no way will they hold onto either of their influential goalscoring midfielders, 23 goals & 12 assists from the pair. Far better stats than Jack Harrison, who is set to leave Leeds.

Tielemans on his way out of Leicester too.

Sort of says it all. Their midfield stats compared to ours. If only we had just one midfielder or even a defender who could get 5-10 goals we'd probably still be in the PL.

An old client of mine is a Leicester fan, really nice fella. He said things have never been the same since they lost their owner in that awful helicopter crash.

They’ve no chance of an immediate return in my opinion.

Even Brentford midfielders/wingers scored over 20 goals.

Just goes to show how poor our squad is

Have we ever replaced Pablo, the sharp answer is a NO!

No Premier League team plays with a goal-shy midfield.

At least the foxes have an emotional, valid excuse for their mess.

Maresca has worked under a great tutor, will be interesting to see how one of his disciples has learned.

Leicester poised to take Enzo Maresca from Manchester City as manager

Maresca is Peps no 2 and no doubt will be well placed to arrange a few well needed loans from Citeh

Stevie G and Dean Smith also applied for the gig

It's a risky one and a bit outside the box.

But if you're looking for omens.

Kompany won his league last season
Xavi won his league.
Arteta had a great season
Ten Hag had a good season
Xabi Alonso earning rave reviews.

Pep disciples are doing good jobs all over the place at the moment.

From Premier League champions to League One in ten years, another set of cheats now getting their comeuppance.

Robbie Savage's first League One game in charge of Peterborough beat the Foxes 1-3 at Leicester.

Hopefully Man City will be playing Leicester in League Two in the future.
