Breakfast Debate The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 2nd September) Deadline Day coup as Bahoya joins Whites

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 2nd September, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Deadline Day coup as Bahoya joins Whites

Leeds United pulled off a deadline-day coup with the capture of highly rated French U21 winger Jean-Mattéo Bahoya under the noses of neighbours Hull City. The moment it became clear the Frenchman had rejected a move to the Tigers, Leeds moved in and closed the deal with Eintracht Frankfurt. Bahoya joins Leeds on loan for the 2026/27 season, with a mandatory purchase clause that will take the fee to a guaranteed €30m (£25m).

He arrived from Angers in January 2024 for around €8 million. In two and a half years he made 78 appearances, scored seven goals and saw his market value rise to €25m. His standout quality remained blistering acceleration; he became one of the Bundesliga’s fastest players while steadily adding end product and tactical discipline. The deal almost went to Hull. Over the final weekend of the window Frankfurt and Hull City reached a verbal agreement.

Bahoya then said no to Hull, leaving his future hanging in the balance. Leeds seized on the opportunity before other clubs had an opportunity to react. The Whites have a good relationship with the Bundesliga side, having seen Rasmus Kristensen complete a permanent move to the Deutsche Bank Park this time last year after a successful loan spell. More recently (last week actually), the Whites completed the move for shot stopper Michael Zetterer.

Frankfurt sporting director Timmo Hardung said...

Jean-Mattéo Bahoya developed very well at Eintracht Frankfurt and gradually worked his way toward the international level. The move to Leeds now represents a new stage in his career. We thank him for his effort and commitment and wish him all the best for the future.

What Leeds fans can expect from Bahoya

Jean-Mattéo Bahoya is an electric, right-footed French youth international who plays primarily as an inverted left-sided winger. After his deadline-day move from Eintracht Frankfurt, he joins Leeds United initially on loan with an obligation to buy worth around £25.7 million. The signing is not just cover. It is a statement about the type of forward Daniel Farke wants in his Premier League attack.

Bahoya holds the official Bundesliga speed record after being clocked at 37.16 km/h against Bochum in March 2025, becoming the first player to break the 37 km/h barrier since the league began publishing the data. That sprint is close to Usain Bolt’s average speed in his 2009 world-record 100 metres. It is not a one-off party trick. Frankfurt used him as a transition weapon precisely because he can leave full-backs behind in a few strides. Currently in the top flight, only Micky van de Ven is fractionally quicker.

He is more than a sprinter. Bahoya is a direct dribbler who looks to isolate defenders one-on-one, especially when starting from the left and cutting onto his stronger right foot. Recent Bundesliga numbers put him among the league’s more productive ball-carriers, with more than two successful dribbles per 90 and a success rate in the high 50s . He is not a touchline-hugging traditional winger who only crosses. He wants to attack the box.

Versatility is the other half of the profile. At Frankfurt he was used across the front line: left wing, right wing, as a No.10 and as a second striker. Listings often call him a winger, an attacking midfielder or a forward, which reflects how he was actually deployed. At 1.80m he is compact rather than imposing, but he has added more tactical discipline and end product as his minutes have grown. Across all competitions for Frankfurt he scored seven goals in 78 appearances, with his league output rising as he became a more regular starter.

His primary role at Leeds is obvious. Farke is expected to start Bahoya as a left-sided inside forward, stretching the pitch vertically before coming inside to shoot or combine. Bahoya’s top-end speed is built for counter attack. If Leeds win the ball and play early, he is the runner who can turn a turnover into a two-versus-two. He is also comfortable on the right and through the middle, which will keep defenders guessing.

Bard completes loan move with option to buy

Deadline day at Elland Road may have belonged to Jean-Mattéo Bahoya, but he was not the only late arrival. Melvin Bard also signed. The 25-year-old French left-back has joined on an initial €1m season-long loan from Nice, with a €5m option to buy. He is Daniel Farke’s sixth senior addition of the summer, and unlike Bahoya he fills a quieter but more immediate squad problem: natural left-footed cover in defence.

Until Bard arrived, Gabriel Gudmundsson was Leeds’ only senior left-footed full-back. James Justin has done the job well enough, but he is right-footed and is also needed at centre-back and on the right. Bard gives Farke a genuine left-sided option rather than a converted one. That matters in a side that has used both a back four and a back five. He is first and foremost a modern left-back, but the profile is broader.

Bard has played as a left-sided centre-back and can step higher as a wing-back or even as a left-sided attacker when the shape demands it. The pedigree is already there. He came through Lyon’s academy, made senior appearances for his boyhood club, then became a regular at Nice after joining in 2021. Close to 200 games for the Ligue 1 side, two Coupe de France finals, and minutes in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League is a substantial body of work for a player still only 25.

In his first interview with LUTV, Bard described himself as someone who “never gives up” and “likes the fight.” That is the tone Leeds need more than highlight-reel pace. He is a balanced full-back rather than a pure attacker. Defensive work comes first, but he is willing to progress the ball and overlap. Across five seasons at Nice he contributed 7 goals and 6 assists; modest numbers, but enough to show he can start transitions rather than simply hold the line.

Not a bad day in the end, much needed cover at wing back and a forward who at least from the videos I’ve watched is the type who can thrive in the premier league - he will give some right backs nightmares I’m sure - we will probably never see it but this guy on the left and James on the right in a 4-4-2 style would be something.

All sorts of options and possibilities now for Farke because with Okafor, DJ & Bahoya we have real pace. Add into that the quailty on the ball that Harry Wilson brings and we could become a fantastic counter attacking team.

Looking solid at the back as well starting with Trafford in goal and then the upgrade that Tarik brings to the left side.

Sounds very much like the type of player who will be well suited to Leeds United. Looking forward to seeing what he can bring to the team/squad.

With JMBs speed there should be less chance of Traffords wayward passes making touch now. :roflmao:

Just kidding.

Morning EB et all,

Got to say another good window, pleased with every player we've brought in, as on the surface they definitely improve the squad and in most cases the first 11.

Plenty of back up across the board, and what I'm most pleased about we haven't got pulled into this stupidity of overpaying by multi-millions for bang average players that the so called top clubs have gotten into a feeding frenzy about.

I think it has broadly been a very successful window with the majority of the problems addressed in a constructive and considered way with a significant upgrade in the starting 11 and a more flexible array of options on the bench . Obviously the striker issue is still there and I'm not sure whether the plan is to use Okafor or Bahoya as potential 2nd strikers at times. Either that or there is somebody who is unattached or about to become detached that they think might work and for that reason decided to focus on the two done yesterday first ?Given that they managed to do all they did on a relatively modest spend while a lot of the Clubs have gone berserk is gratifying and probably means that there will for once be something in the kitty for January.

Agree with the comments above. Overall a strong window, especially as the 1st team has strengthened overall.

Also worth noting the amount of fringe players who have moved on. They were unlikely to play in most cases so best all round we free up the wage bill and they get to progress their careers. That has to be a success.

What would be nice (at least until Dec) is if we can stop talking about what we're missing in the squad and start focussing on how we use what we have in the squad. New addition chat can wait for me (at least until Dec) > We've got a good hatful of games to win by then.

48 more points up for grabs by Jan 1st - dream and we could be safe from relegation by then (16 games / 2 points per game ;-) )

Its only a good window on paper.
The proof is in the eating or at least once through the door to the next window and our position is positive thanks in some way to the new recruits then it is a good window as a window can only be deemed good in hindsight.
Thank you.

Very good transfer window overall! I said when we got promoted that we would not be able to improve the squad all at once. But last year we were able to upgrade the squad with 5 new starters. (Bijol, Stach, Gudmundsson, Okafor, and DCL) This transfer window we've added 3 more starters. (Trafford, Muha, and Wilson) And of course over the two years we have also overhauled our depth. (Justin, Longstaff, Nmecha, Elvedi, Bard, Bahoya). In fact, the only players from our Championship team still getting regular starts/minutes are Ampadu, Bogle, Rodon, and Aaronson. This season we might add Dan James to the mix of Championship players still making major contributions. Along with Tanaka, and Gruev. But I think that's a pretty comprehensive overhaul of the squad! Next summer, assuming we are able to solidify our position in the EPL, I think we go for some BIG attacking contributors.
