Match Thread Cardiff City v Leeds Utd Match Thread - Bamford Starts Up Front

Post by Ellandback1 »

13th January 3:00pm | Cardiff City Stadium

Leeds make the four hour journey to South East Wales on Saturday afternoon, hoping to keep the (2024) 100% win record intact, against play-off Hopefuls Cardiff City.

Leeds don't have the best of records against the Bluebirds, having not beaten them in the league since October 2016, when a Chris Wood spot kick, and some Pablo magic saw Garry Monk's Leeds record a rare victory over what many consider their bogey side. Since 1984, the two teams have met in the league on 25 occasions, with Leeds recording fifteen defeats, seven draws and only three wins. Eleven points and five places currently separate them.

Following their 4-0 hammering at Hillsborough, Erol Bulut will demand a better performance against the Whites. Joe Ralls and Yakou Meite should be restored to the team though Aaron Ramsey, Callum O'Dowda and Karlan Grant all remain absent through injury.

Leeds welcome back Illan Meslier back to the starting line-up after his three game ban, and with Darlow injured (thumb), Klaesson will at make the bench. Following Patrick Bamford's return to form he keeps his playe up front ahead of Joel Piroe. Georginio Rutter will have free licence in a deeper role yet again. Archie Gray returns to right back, well who else is there, with Junior Firpo on the oposite side. Ethan Ampadu will partner countryman Joe Rodon in the centre of defence yet again.

Glen Kamara and Ilia Gruev start in the middle of midfield with Summerville and James out wide.nPascal Struijk and Liam Cooper miss out completely, leaving Daniel Farke light on defensive options on the bench.

Oh heck, we are playing Cardiff on the back of a 4-0 thrashing.

That doesn't generally bode well for us.

Cresswell will not be picked at the moment re DF therefore:

Meslier
Gray, Rodon, Ampadu, Byrum
Kamara, gruve( i know this is the wrong spelling)
Summerville, Rutter, James
Bamford

Cardiff are likely gonna sit back and hope to frustrate us.

They will be looking to kick lumps out of Summerville and Rutter, so it would be nice to have a good referee who nips that in the bud early on.

I’d guess similar but think it will be closer to last week at the back with the only change the keeper and gruev making way for Kamara

Byram is probably a risk and think will be held back unless firpo is struggling

Defo a game for Bamford this, lets us go direct if necessary. I’d be pissed off if I was Piroe though, just wants to play upfront but not deemed capable.

Not a prayer Cresswell plays Malcolm.

Meslier

Gray - Rodon - Ampadu - Byram

Gruev

James - Geo - Kamara - Summerville

Bamford

I would expect to see CC on the bench unless Coop is fit to go. If he is he'll start and Gruev drops to the bench

He best hadn't ask Farke to play up front before January 31st :)

Farke has already said he won't be selecting Cresswell for the match squad from now until further notice, and he said it with a fair bit of venom.

Not for us BB. He's done here, unless he goes grovelling and apologising to DF, and that won't be happening neither.

Farke said Charlie sees himself as one of the two best CBs at the club, and made the point that he sees him as number four.

You’re right mate, unfortunately.

It’ll take a massive turnaround for Charlie now.

Which, to be frank, is really stupid. And makes me think a lot less of our manager, if true.. Charlie is young, Farke is old enough to know better. even worse if he's pissed off at Richard Cresswell...

Struijk Cooper out, Cresswell out - 1 CB left as I assume Farke won't consider Hjelde there...

Straight from the horse's mouth.

I have a problem when the coach is prepared to put his own pride, and the need to send a message before the needs of the club.

But seems like the bridge was pretty much burned all season and then demolished before the Cup match.

Farke may be proving a point, but that might well be to the detriment of LUFC.

I'm surprised things have gone this way.

He's proved the point with Gnonto and Sinisterra...

Farke has a unique way of letting his players know, they are not good enough, as is the case with the Meslier/Klaesson situation.

He is probably right with his assessment.

Broken biscuits at the back, players not good enough being moved on, so we are back to the old scenario of square pegs in round holes to see us through the season unless we have a few surprise incomings.
