Match Thread Leeds United 6-2 Cagliari Calcio Match Thread

Post by YorkshireSquare »

Sunday 31st July 6:45pm | Elland Road

Leeds United's pre-season culminates this Sunday with a friendly against Cagliari Calcio at Elland Road ahead of the start of the Premier League season next weekend. The game will now kick off 45 minutes at later at 6:45pm following the England Women's impressive performances in the Women’s Euro 2022 tournament which sees them play Germany in the final at Wembley at 5.00pm on Sunday. The new kick-off time will allow everyone to watch the full match, before taking their seat to enjoy the final pre-season friendly of the summer for Jesse Marsch’s side, as they take on Italian Serie B outfit Cagliari.

A mixed bag of results so far this pre-season has seen Leeds beat Blackpool and Brisbane Roar, lose to Aston Villa and draw against Crystal Palace. With unconvincing performances so far, Marsch will want a good performance and good result, as such he is expected to name a strong starting eleven. New signings Marc Roca and Tyler Adams have impressed, and fans will hope to get a glimpse of them playing together in the middle of midfield for the first time. Rasmus Kristensen, quickly becoming a fans favourite, will likely start at right back with Diego Llorente and Robin Koch in the centre of defence.

One of the big questions for Jesse Marsch ill be at left back. With Junior Firpo injured; Jack Harrison, Leo Hjelde or Pascal Struijk are all in contention for the position with Struijk perhaps at the top of the pecking order. Exciting signing Luis Sinisterra picked up a hamstring injury in Perth with Brenden Aaronson moving out to the right wing, Harrison the obvious choice for left wing if he doesn’t start further back. Marsch has favoured Rodrigo in the No10 role, though fans are still yet to be impressed by the Spaniard as he starts his third season at Elland Road. Patrick Bamford needs more minutes up front as he returns from injury but fans will be keen to see more of Joe Gelhardt as he continues to excite and develop into a real talent.

I’m across for this one to meet a few old mates and get a look at the Marsch babies in the flesh. Anyone attending who fancies a quick pint or just to say hello, drop me a pm.

As always on these occasions, sobriety may be in short supply. 😎

First friendly I've attended in three seasons, looking forward to this one.

Hope the majority of our players played at least 75 to 90 minutes of the game.

Should imagine he'll be starting first 11.

What can we expect to see Paul? Not the team, i mean style, probably my hated 4-2-3-1 and not a lot of width ? Do you think he might try one half of something and a 2nd half of something else ?

I'm up in North Yorkshire this weekend for a supposed cycling weekend but it's pissing down and unlikely to stop all day if the forecast is correct 😢. Hoping to watch the game via a live stream tomorrow

Nice, we almost bought a house near Ripon when looking for property prior to us deciding to move to East Yorkshire from the south 22 years ago.

This has got to be close to his first choice starting 11 and the tactics we are likely to use.

Only a friendly but a big game as an indicator on how we might get on this season.

We usually end up at the top of the steps behind the Peacock before the game starts Leon, but with the Lionesses playing we may end up in front of a tv screen somewhere this time.

If we end up in the Peacock, I'll listen out for any Irish accents, Davy :-D

Sinisterra isn't in the training video.

Neither is Cooper.

That is one lightweight bench.

Is Jesse trying to make a point?
