That is down and out in Paris and London. I read that 30 or more years ago and will probably re-read at some point.

This (so far) traces the lives of the coal miners in the 1930s. Observing the affects of Industrialisation on the working poor. That might sound like a dry read but it is compelling.

I'd heard of that too. but was confusing the two. Just watched the history of Britain DVD's with Simon Schama. He speaks a lot about Orwell. He calls the episode "The Two Winstons" likening Orwell to Churchill in historical importance. I loved 84 and Animal Farm. I need to read more.

Instead of a novel, to begin I would suggest Decline of the English Murder and other Essays.


There you get an idea on how he sees the world.

Elmet by Fiona Mozley. Good read for those brought up East of Leeds like me (Selby). Noirish delving into the semi rural communities around Micklefield and the East Coast main line, bit of an off the beaten track area. Very atmospheric.

There are theories that Hitler didn't actually die in the bunker, mate.

Some think he escaped Germany on a submarine towards the end of the war, and went to Argentina.

I'm in the process of looking for books on the topic.

I find that theory plain conspiracy that sells books IMO of course, he was the most recognisable figure in history and would have been grassed up by someone for a few marks even with a disguise on, someone would know.
It was evident that Hitler had Parkinson's disease, there is film footage of his hand tremors so I'm not sure he'd have got to the ripe old age many theorist claim.

I'm re reading 'Sleepers' by Lorenzo Carcaterra, the film version is great but the book is better.

Just finished reading this. Published in 2008, so a few years old now, but very good and makes you think of the impact our lifestyles have on the planet.
