I'm very well versed on that story and the events, not read the book as yet in whole, I lost it on holiday and meant to buy it again, let me know your thoughts, I would say it's a superb fascinating insightful read ,also a true account of most things.

In naming it Book of the Year, Anthony Beevor of the Telegraph called it, “The most important work of history for years.”

Snyder terms the book a history of political mass murder. I am about halfway through and it’s brilliant.

Some think he escaped Germany on a submarine towards the end of the war, and went to Argentina.

Researching La Cumbrecita could be a good start (if you haven’t already) - a VERY Bavarian modelled/structured town in the middle of Argentina…

A few germans did go to argentina after the war, non managed us though.

Following up with the Red Goddess, an earlier work by the same author, detailing the Whore of Babylon, as depicted by John of Patmos, as an attack/ representation of the fertility cult of Innana-Ishtar-Astarte. Explores later developments through the work of John Dee and Crowley, and the suppression of the feminine through Christianity and it's successor, technocratic materialism.

No mention of Hitler.

The whole mother goddess thing goes right back to Nimrod. I have read a lot about it.

Interesting idea about the suppression of the feminine in Christianity.

Complete tosh of course, Christianity broke the power of the tribe/ clan system and elevated the woman to a dignified place in the family and in society instead of being used as essentially as vessel for producing more males to protect the system.

Ever read any of John Romers stuff?

I haven't read John Romer, no. I can't agree with your statement about Christianity elevating the status of women. The association of women's bodies with sinful desires, and their depiction as wicked temptresses of men, has done anything but. However, I expect this isn't the place for further discussion.

All the Cormac McCarthy books are brilliant especially “No Country For Old Men” (great film), Child Of God & Blood Meridian. Read that last one 3 times. Wish he’d write another one.

I thought The Road was better than No Country - although the movies would be the opposite

That is down and out in Paris and London. I read that 30 or more years ago and will probably re-read at some point.

This (so far) traces the lives of the coal miners in the 1930s. Observing the affects of Industrialisation on the working poor. That might sound like a dry read but it is compelling.
