I read elsewhere he wasn't carded because it wasn't considered a foul as Vvd was offside in the build up, that can't be right, surely?

What a stupid precident ...If that was a rule you would have players like me running to take out an opposition player every offside call ... as its a freebie

Only VAR saw the offside, nobody else could see it in the replay of the incident
