Match Thread Leeds United v Hull City - MATCH THREAD - Bielsa makes eleven changes

EFL Cup Tie : Leeds Utd v Hull City

Wednesday 14th September 2020 19:45 | Elland Road

With Saturday’s Premier League game firmly on Marcelo Bielsa’s mind, Leeds make eleven changes for the visit of Hull in the Carabao Cup. The Tigers are the visitors to Elland Road for the first time since they were relegated to the third tier of English football and whilst getting one over on one of their Yorkshire rivals would be very tempting, their bid for promotion back to the Championship must surely be top priority. They've invested wisely during the Summer, with two names that catch the eye. Mallik Willks and Lewie Coyle were both considered exciting players for the future, yet like so many, didn't quite make it!

Leeds hand debuts to the young central defensive partnership of Ollie Casey and Charlie Cresswell whilst Leif Davis and Barry Douglas will complete the back four in front of Kiko Casilla in the Leeds net. Shackleton, Bogusz and Roberts will start in central midfield with Alioski and Poveda out wide with new boy, Spanish international, Rodrigo up front. It is a young but exciting line-up for Leeds and will be valuable experience for some of the next academy players to come through the ranks and this summers record breaking transfer.

When the sides last met a comprehensive second half performance from Leeds United saw them run out four nil winners against Hull City on Saturday. An early second half goal from Pablo Hernandez killed Hull off and Leeds were rampant after that playing some lovely flowing football. The first half had been a different story, despite an early goal from Luke Ayling the game was scrappy, Hull battled hard and Leeds took a while to get a grip on the game. Eventually though, they got into their stride and ran out justified and strong winners.

Leeds Starting XI
Casilla, Davis, Casey, Cresswell, Douglas, Bogusz, Poveda, Shackleton, Roberts, Alioski, Rodrigo

Subs: Meslier, Bamford, Struijk, Harrison, Phillips, McCalmont, Gotts

It would be good to see some of new young lads, Greenwood, Gelhardt etc and my own tip for the top, Cresswell. The problem is, of course, they have not played together long enough to be a force and whilst I wouldn’t mind losing in a tight game, if we have anything close to repeat of the Accrington result then that would be a real confidence destroyer for the young lads.
I think Bielsa will go for a strong team with mostly 1st teamers and treat it a bit like a pre-season friendly.

Play the first team, with the shortened pre-season, they need to get their match fitness and sharpness up.

Yeah, agreed.
Mainly the team that played Liverpool but with a couple of changes (Poveda, Shackleton perhaps?)
Koch and Struijk definitely need another game together if Coops is still out.

I don't see the U-23's playing. Firstly they're all short on match fitness and second, we have many first teamers that need game time. The U-23's play tonight, so we might get a good idea by who doesn't play.

Koch and Rodrigo have to play. I'd play our first choices at the back: Meslier, Ayling, Koch, Cooper (or Strujik)

I'd rest a few: Klich and Phillips got niggles. Hernandez isn't going to start 40+ games. Dallas played 2 internationals last week. Costa and Harrison (possibly Bamford) will probably be knackered after that Liverpool game.

Meslier, Ayling, Douglas, Koch, Cooper, Strujik, Shackleton, Roberts, Alioski, Poveda, Rodrigo

Davis, Casey, Gotts, Bogusz, Stevens, Gelhardt might all deserve a game, but I think all the above players have to play

Our first team in the main especially they had virtually no pre-season games

Also one of the two cups are winnable so we should be giving them our best shot

It's a funny one, really. It's easy to only care about a cup run when there' nothing else in the season to play for. We've had promotion to be concerned with the past two seasons, but now we've got survival to worry about.

Conversely, when does any club ever have that luxurious position? Maybe perennial mid-tablers but they're not on the beach till the back end of the season. Would we be kicking ourselves come Feb/Mar if we're looking safe in the league but have been knocked out of the cups by fielding weaker teams?

Honestly, I can't decide what I want but that ain't important - it's what Bielsa wants and he wants everyone in the matchday squad, whoever they are, to win.

Hope I can watch it on LUTV as ESPN won't be carrying it here in the US.

GK Casilla
CB Davis
DMCasey
CBCresswell
LB Douglas
RB Shackelton
CM Bogusz
RW Poveda
LW Alioski
FW Roberts
AM Rodrigo

Guessing Shackleton is right back with Casey DM. The above would be my guess at the formation.

Whats the defence set up? Davis at RB? Maybe a back 3 - Casey, Cresswell, Davis with Douglas and Shacks as wing backs?

Really surprised Bielsa is putting out such a young side but intrigued to see how they do.

Cresswell is a natural CB and Bielse seems to like Davis playing there too. Doubt we will see Davis on the right with him being left footed. Casey primarily a DM but we do know that Bielsa likes to expose them to CB roles too.

Thanks.

Thought it would have been worth Koch getting some game time to settle in.

I know Davis and Douglas both dabbled at DMC in one of the preseason games. Not sure if Casy or Cresswell have played there in the 23's. Makes me think its a back 3 with wing backs
