It always plays a part.
He's gonna want decent wages, his agent will no doubt take into account his game time.
He didn't justify all those games let's be honest, he's a Farke favourite so performance was largely irrelevant game to game he was getting minutes regardless.
He played a part absolutely.
But did he play a massive part?
Mentioning stats, he got 2 assists 0 goals in his last 16 games.
2 goals no assists in his last 21 Championship starts.
A played a part and fair play but he's careless on the ball, creatively erratic, and goes missing for huge chunks of games (not just one or two).
On a very short term deal (1 year with an option for a 2nd) and low wages maybe.
But it wouldn't be that, it would be big money and longer.
He hasn't earned that.
You need to get away from your over relaince on stats, especially when just selecting 1 or 2 rather than forming an overall assessment and judging a player on the many facets of their game. BA's biggest strength is probably as the 'energiser bunny.' He runs, harries etc all game. So as a 10 what he lacks in goals/assists he compensates by helping out the midfield. His stats aren't great but he makes the midfield a bit stronger as a unit. So it's not a case of him being a player that says, "I've done my job so don't blame me that we lost," he is a player that might not score or assist but helps the team win, he hasn't done his job, in terms of a no.10 output, but has helped the team win.
That is what the team is all about, the sum of the parts, rather than a collection of great individuals.
Yes I'd love a Rutter, or even a Brandt possibly (not seen enough of him) but equally the team can function well with an Aaronsen.

Ah your mastermind specialist subject.
For me a 2 year extension simply seems a good idea. I get that we want to replace with better etc but it isn't like the footy manager games where you go into a club, sell every fecker and buy a new team. It's like the DCL situation, if you sell then what do you realistically get with the money cos not going to be selling either for a fortune. So you have them in the squad, they are good enough to start but then over the next 2 or 3 years you hope that the team is evolving so that we get to a point where either they have raised their games and are first team starter standard so are still worth having in the squad or the team has improved and you thank them for their service. But no point getting rid and then having to probably spend circa £40m to replace them both with players that likely aren't much better. All about prioritising our greatest need, so if you think it is a new 9 then we buy a new 9 but still have DCL as competition - a bit like with Rodrigo and Bamford. Or we buy a 10 and Aaronsen competes, is back up, is fresh legs etc rather than buying a new 10 and a new back-up no 10.
Do you honestly believe he deserves a new deal?
1st season poor
2nd season sodded off (was poor their so they didn't want to buy him)
3rd season a serviceable job in the Championship
4th season a few good games, more mediocre and poor.
If he was willing to accept a short term deal on low wages maybe a year or two?
But realistically he won't, rightly or wrongly Farke made him a mainstay, his agent will expect wages and contract length to reflect that.
Has he earned that?
Because I can't see any scenario any agent worth his salt accepts a short deal on low wages for a player in their prime who has played basically every week for 2 seasons.

Only mentioned stats as Paul did.
He has value and has contributed.
Just don't think it's new deal worthy unless he accepts a short term one on lower end wages.
And I can't see any way that happens.
From an agents pov he's played basically every game, he's back in the international side (bit part admittedly) he's in his prime years.
They will want wages to reflect that and contract length and imo absolutely no way even being kind he's justified that.
£5-7mil and see if any MLS teams fancy him, thank him move on.
I made a successful, and lucrative, career twisting stats one way or the other to suit my client. I could have argued any which way should I have so wished
What I see in Aaronson is a decent enough player, tries hard, harries etc but nothing particularly special.
He’s played his part for us, other than we he went AWOL when the going got tough, we definitely need to upgrade (some would say we already have with Wilson).
I’d definitely sell, before he leaves for nowt at the end of next season.

Just saying.

However, we do need squad players, Cjay.
I suspect three or four of last season's first XI could find themselves on the bench come the new season, Aaronson being one of them. I'm in the camp where I'm not bothered whether we keep or sell him.

Probably not a fair comparison but stand him next to Bowyer and pick one! Bowyer also ran all day but he was freakin brilliant. And a new Bowyer is the kind of player we should be signing! I'd sell Aaronson rather than give him a contract: he will want/need more (money) than he is worth to us...

Bowyer was such a terrific player for us. Such a shame it ended the way it did.

We do Leon true.
But we have players here who can do a better or similar job to BA and we don't need to give them a new contract for the privilege.
Longstaff, Tanaka, James, Gnonto etc.
That's the main issue with BA, keeping him requires a new deal and he hasn't justified that imo.

Well let's say we were to sell him. I doubt we would get more than £10m, possibly quite a bit less. So we get £10m and we are looking to buy a better player for £10m - the scouting department would need to pull a rabbit out of the hat. So instead of getting the £10m we get Aaronsen to sign a 2 year extension, we then have a decent squad player, that hasn't cost us any extra (in terms of having to pay a new transfer fee). We have a player that has the manage's trust and we know that even if his stats are poor we will still get the workrate etc. So there is no reason to suggest he will regress - on the contrary given his poor stats there is mor elikelihood of improved stats.
I just see it as making no point selling him unless we were to get really good money for him. Selling him doesn't particularly help us in terms of generating funds to improve the side. So keep him and still keep improving the squad.

Indeed we do and that is why I would look to keep him. Some first teamers will find themselves as squad players - that is just the natural evolvement. So sell the ones that aren't of any use first unless the offer is too good to turn down.

He's just a backup though.
We have players on longer contracts here who can do as good if not a better job.
Longstaff cost us tons use him
Tanaka
James
Gnonto
All can cover his squad role and not need a new deal for the privelege.
And yes maybe if he signed a 2 year deal but he wouldn't for the reasons I said unless he's desperate to stay.

I don’t want to derail the Aaronson thread, but is Charles really on Bowyer’s level?.
I know nothing about him.
Well not yet and he's more Gary Mac than Bowyer. But that's his ceiling for me, he looks a cultured on the ball player that tackles really well, breaks up play, has pace to break with the ball. Good passer, has a shot like Stach and high football IQ. In the right team he's going to be champions league quality for me

The trouble is that they don't. They all offer their own skillsets, do some things better than BA and some things wore. Gnonto hasn't shifted BA out of the side yet so no rerason to suggest he is higher in Farke's plans. Longstaff totally different type of player. Dan James agains a different player, albeit I'd like to see what he could do going through the middle. Tanaka is probably the more like for like and I suggested at the end of last season that Tanaka could take BA's spot
My guess would be Gnonto will be sold and I wouldn't be surpised if Tanaka goes too. As such if we are repalcing them then does it make any real sense to also get rid of BA and use the potential £5m-£10m we get. If we were talking say £20m or if he was on £100k p/w wages then yeah financially it makes sense but that likely isn't the case so financially it makes little sense to sell him and then replace him as we wouldn't be getting a superstar for that money. For now it is a case that he can do a job for us, be it as a starter or a squad player - it isn't like he is a glaring weak link but maybe in a couple of years time the club has improved and at that point he is. It may be though that he keeps improving - likely never to the level of player we thought we were signing but simply scoring or setting up a few more goals.
