Re: Music Chat Thread - new Top 10's Led Zep, The Stones & Beatles
I have a question for all the music buffs on the forum.
I was in a discussion the other day about music and was asked about so-called 'supergroups'.
I said I've always thought most of these were British bands. I cited the following examples:
Beatles
Rolling Stones
Pink Floyd
Led Zeppelin
The Who
Cream
Queen
Genesis
The Police
Who else would you add, who would you take out?
US supergroups to me could be The Eagles and Bon Jovi.

I think it somewhat depends on how you define "supergroup". The way I always understood it is a term reserved for bands who came together with prior fame- so Cream being the classic example. Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young would be the standout example for US bands. Travelling Wilburys, Audioslave a couple others.malcolmw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 1:01 am I have a question for all the music buffs on the forum.

Thanks Shaun. Yes, forgot about CSN&Y.Evan R wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 2:39 am I think it somewhat depends on how you define "supergroup". Certainly a supergroup. (Young's Harvest is one of my 'desert island albums')
Re. the definition, to me its a band that transends others of its generation - and outlast those others. So if that's the case, you could argue for bands like The Cure?

I an see why....... after all when things are so bad on the island, listening to his wailing and moaning that sounds like a cat being castrated without pain relief, will make it so much easier to slit your wrists with a rusty razor blade....malcolmw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 2:56 am Thanks Shaun. Supergroups for us in the UK tends to mean bands put together with members from other bands. So Asia/Cream/Audioslave, even CSNY... that sort of thingmalcolmw wrote: ↑Fri Jun 26, 2026 1:01 am I have a question for all the music buffs on the forum.

But for your purposes
I can't argue Beatles, Queen, PF, The Who, Zep or the Stones even though I hate Jaggers voice. Genesis are the best known/biggest prog band probably before they went pop. There are basically two Genesis bands.
Cream comes out, only 2 true albums.
I'd not have The Police in there either, only 4 years of production, ditto the Jam.
REM have to be in the American supergroup list, I'm guessing Bon Jovi were bigger in the States but not a supergroup here and by a distance.
Eagles though, absolutely.
For British bands you'd have to add Radiohead and definitely Fleetwood Mac. Probably AC/DC too
Need to have a think

There's a case for sure... and DP. Neither are in Zeppelin/Floyd's class though.

Love Fleetwood Mac, but could never get into Radiohead or AC/DC.
You could aregue supergroup are bands who have somewhat defined a genre.
Cream seem to be included because of the sheer talent of the 3 members. Same for The Police.

Re: Music Chat Thread - new Top 10's Led Zep, The Stones & Beatles
Talent doesn't come into it for me, it's very important but it doesn't define supergroup in the way you mean. There are 50 guitarists better than Clapton anyway and even if Bruce is a legendary bassist, Baker has many many many equals
Cream a Supergroup? Yes, in they came together from other bands but not Supergroup because of the music, longevity and creativity.
Cream didn't define a genre either for me. It's rock isn't it, maybe psychedelia?
Stones defined rock much more, early Queen before they went pop. Zeppelin defined blues rock, Beatles defy genre labelling and just produced great music (and crap music) in multiple genres
Top of my head and of course a point of view from this side of the pond
60's The Beatles, The Who, and the Stones
70's Zeppelin, Floyd and maybe Queen (yes I know Zep and Floyd started in the 60's but the masterworks were 70's for the most part)
80's REM
90's Radiohead
00's, 10's and 20's - Will take a lot of thinking about as there no one band is straddling the world that's obvious for these decades
This is not even personal bias as I don't rate Queen after Sheer Heart Attack, way too commercial for me and even at 15 I thought Bohemian Rhapsody way too pretentious and boring. Already said Jagger's fake valley boy drawl is like nails on a blackboard for me.
If I had my way one or two of Zappa's bands would be on the list, but the music is esoteric and not for general consumption. In terms of talent though, Zappa, Vai, Duke, Ponty, Murphy Brock, The Underwoods, Duran, Done Sugarcane Harris, three of the top ten drummers of all time, blows away Cream. I love Zappa, the artistic genius of the second half of the 20th century, buit Supergroup? No
REM I love, their songcraft is second to none, Radiohead just produced the best music
The most important band outside of the Beatles?.... is probably the Pixies, some will say the Velvet Underground as well. Not me though. The Pixies inspired grunge which inspired nu metal and we got indie music like never before and a few other wonderful marginal genres we see today. But again the Pixies are not a supergroup despite their massive influence on what came after (By the way, what a guitarist Joey Santiago is, and Kim Deal on bass? Wow )

They should tbf. Again, nothing after War worth listening but they have the longevity, the sales and can sell out arena toursMuppet the Cat wrote: ↑Sat Jun 27, 2026 6:43 pm I would have thought U2 should be in the conversation

Not into heavy metal at all, but AC/DC's bagpipe song 'Its a long way to the top'is one of my favourites. Check it out
