The chap is paid handsomely to stop shots on goal - that is the major part of his job. He is not paid to make schoolboy errors which a lad in the juniors would be embarrassed by. His lack of ability to catch crosses and corners is also a major worry, as is his distribution when he has the ball at his feet. I hope that I am wrong but there are likely to be other expensive c**k-ups before the end of the season.White Riot wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 9:05 pm This is what I mean, there's a comprehensive body of evidence that he has built up. And don't settle for these lazy arguments that a good goalie would cost 20 million GBP. Stoke picked Johanson up from Rotherham for £1 million.
If we'd have been in for him he'd have bitten our hand off. So, that imo is negligence on our behalf. As I've said before, Newcastle got Pope from Burnley for £10 million, and he's the best English goalkeeper for me.

Football - Funny old game. We win 3-0, move 3 points clear of Burnley in 3rd with +10 better goal difference so effectively a 4 point lead & we all spend the evening at each others throats.
Gonna be a hoot if we ever get to the Prem & get humped 6-0 by Shittty. Can’t wait.

I would say though that with the draft system in American sports it makes it easier for a team to be mediocre for a long time and then suddenly good as they have had a succession of top draft picks. On the flip side you then have a team like the Patriots who becuase they were successful for so long basically got no decent draft picks for ages so now are sh*te.White Riot wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 7:48 pm It's like that at ER Leon, coaches and plenty of fans are wedded to mediocrity. If Darlow is given a chance it will only be if Meslier is injured or ill. Even if he was given a match he would never be awarded the generosity that's been bestowed on the likes of Meslier and Bamford, despite the clangers and underwhelming performances.
I'll give you an example Leon. My NFL team, Washington, was successful and a huge force in the 80s and up to 1991. Since then we had a terrible owner who let the franchise run into the ground. Last season new owners came in and assessed the franchise without making any drastic moves and we finished Won 4 Lost 13. In the off season the management and coaches were completely cleaned out and replaced with 100% professional people.
With free agents and drafted rooky players the playing roster was spruced up, with a specific recruitment focus on a mix of talent, experience and especially a winning mentality. This season we Won 12 and Lost 5 and made it to the playoffs where we have just won our first knock out matches against teams that were supposed to wallop us.
Two more wins and we win the Superbowl, and I'm not seeing anything that will stop us doing that now, and this franchise is now on track for a sustained period of dominance. That has all occurred in two seasons.
If you get the correct owners, that are committed to excellence and will invest and manage professionally, with the right staff, then anything is possible. I don't buy all this bullshit about 5 year plans at all.
So, if Washington can do it, then why not Leeds United?

Apologies, Cjay.Cjay wrote: ↑Sun Jan 19, 2025 6:19 pm I'm sorry but that is simply not true.
Piroe worked hard and forced quite a few poor passes and mistakes.
Perception of a player definitely alters opinions on here.
(In general not a dig at you).
Joseph ran around a bit against a team pushing forward and leaving space, if that's Piroe it's "well definitely shows he needs to come off the bench".
Joseph though "didn't he do well, let's start him".
Blah![]()
Piroe wasn't as anonymous as I implied.
Joel did all his good work in the first-half, ten pieces of decent play from the big fella.
Hardly touched the ball after the break, so understandably subbed in the 69th minute.

Would agree with that.
He wasn't outstanding, but he imo didn't deserve once again some of the comments on social media and some of the ratings he got.
We've had players perform far worse.
He was OK and did work really hard.

Nice theory, not true... A high draft pick is very often a bust. The rate being around the same as a second rounder... Our best player was a 4th rounder, same position as our 7 pick last season who's headed toward bust status... The draft position has nothing to do with the Pats current predicament... It's an end of era rebuild thing, and they may need a while to find their next Belichick and or Bradyweasel wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2025 1:23 am I would say though that with the draft system in American sports it makes it easier for a team to be mediocre for a long time and then suddenly good as they have had a succession of top draft picks. The other interesting thing about college scouting? Amatuer armchair fans are often better at talent spotting than scouts and war rooms

It is a stockpiling of prospects whereby the teams consistently doing sh*t get several higher up picks each year than a team doing well. As such by law of averages even if the top picks don't slways turn into superstars you have far more top end picks. The Pats had several years of not being able to sufficiently bolster their youth ranks - as such they then end up having to spend more on players often then having to trade away their better youth prospects to bring in players that were good. So it is a continual case of not getting the best youth players plus having to trade your better ones to bolster the first team. The Subhuman wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2025 12:22 pm Nice theory, not true... Re: Leeds Utd v Sheffield Wednesday Match Thread
Patriots had plenty of chances to bolster their ranks with youth, they were just poor drafters. The Pats skill was taking players others deemed not good enough and recognising that talent once it had NFL experience. They played the wire well, they were good in UFA. As I say their troubles now (if they can be called that as they're rebuilding a dynasty) are not down to not having top ten draft picks.weasel wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2025 1:21 pm It is a stockpiling of prospects whereby the teams consistently doing sh*t get several higher up picks each year than a team doing well. You can build very well, if not better, with late round picks, there are way to many teams failing on a yearly basis (Raiders/Jets/Jaguars/Giants/Panthers and a number more) with yearly high/multiple draft picks for the draft to be the key route to success...
Current Raider face of the franchise was a 4th round pick..

Error count much lower than in our previous matches of late.
173 good pieces of play,
29 poor pieces of play.

Re: Leeds Utd v Sheffield Wednesday Match Thread
Yeah, it's a different system all together Weasel, and it's multi-faceted. KC have succeeded for quite a few seasons now, and Brady and co stayed at the top for a few decades.weasel wrote: ↑Mon Jan 20, 2025 1:23 am I would say though that with the draft system in American sports it makes it easier for a team to be mediocre for a long time and then suddenly good as they have had a succession of top draft picks. Washington had loads of top draft picks when they were shite, which is about 3 decades worth of s**t. But because the franchise was not properly managed you had dickheads wasting those draft picks. Our list of failed draft picks is epic.
No coincidence that we got a great owner in and he brought the best management staff in to get us on track. Everything has turned to gold very quickly. You could say we're lucky in that even though this was maybe the best QB draft class ever, the Bears still managed to f**k it up and pick Caleb Williams ahead of Jayden Daniels.
We were very keen on bringing a young OC in as HC, and set our sights on Ben Johnson the Lions OC. Our new GM Adam Peters, the 49ers guru and the best executive in the game, told Johnson on his flight to Detroit to interview Johnson we would be drafting a QB. Johnson stipulated Washington would need to keep their existing QB Sam Howell, who will never be good enough. So the interview was cancelled.
The stars aligned and we got AP as GM, Dan Quinn as HC, Kliff Kingsbury as OC and Joe Whitt Junior as DC. Dan Quinn has a burning desire to avenge the time as Atlanta HC, when he lost the Superbowl to Brady and the Patriots, and boy does that show in the way Washington has bonded and plays. The roster is nowhere near complete, with lots of holes filled by free agents, but the brotherhood DQ has created has made them greater than the sum of their parts.
I just feel that if they can turn it around so quickly after 30 years of s**t, why can't Leeds?
