Sometimes I wish....
.....that I felt about football like I did in the 60/70's. I loved football, I watched any team playing because I loved the game. FA CUP, whoever was playing I loved it, League Cup, Match of the Day always something to look fwd to. I didn't dislike any team but I loved Leeds. So....where has my dislike, maybe even hatred of some teams come from. I seem to spend wasteless energy now on such negativity when watching other teams play. Instead of enjoying the game I always seem to want one team to lose....what has happened to me? This has become apparent over the last 15 years or so.....is it just me? Or are others on here feeling the same thing? Did the supporters of 60s/70s have a different outlook on the game.
So many on here have a thing about Man Utd, Chelsea, Citeh, Arsenal and most recently Everton and Leicester. What makes us feel this way?

Football is a totally different game to what we were brought up on in the 60s/70s, Swannie.whiteswan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 12:05 am .....that I felt about football like I did in the 60/70's. All man-made interferences from authorities & people within the game, greed being the main factor for the decline in our national sport.
I used to love the cups/international football/MOTD formats, all has changed for the worse!

Re: Sometimes I wish....
I find that if I know someone who supports a team who is an avid social media poster every time their team wins a corner I want them to lose.
For example I would be really happy if Aston Villa never won another game in my lifetime.
I used to want any British team to do well in Europe but the influx of foreign players now means I couldn't care less and never watch it.
The availability to be able to watch any game whenever you like has also taken away the mystique of things in a similar way that going to see a new group that you'd heard about was exciting, but now you can see a video on youtube of them playing every dive they have ever played in.
VOAL.

Re: Sometimes I wish....
I’d say a lot of the people on this site were born in the 60’s/70’s when the only football we seen was the FA Cup final, MOTD and the odd European game. Now it’s on 24 hrs a day so it’s inevitable that it will lose its appeal, then there’s social media, football news, repeats, interviews etc where every game is scrutinised to death. I refuse to watch these meaningless Champions League qualifiers now as I’m sick of the way FIFA & UEFA are ruining the game. All in the name of progress apparently.

Re: Sometimes I wish....
The dislikes imo have been passed on from when you went to matches as a young fan. The standing area behind the goal was melting pop of joy and hatred and while others may think its a tribal thing where your colours and home turf need to be defended at all costs. Its all a bit of a waste of energy now, football have changed where families are encouraged to attend. The matches still have the intensity but the anger of the past has been left at the door. The chants are actually funny now, but look at some of the things fans used to do, most would be arrested and then banned from the ground for life. Overall its better, we still don't like other sides but there is less chance of a bottle being thrown into the away supporters end.....Quite right

Re: Sometimes I wish....
It certainly felt a lot more of a dangerous adventure going to watch Leeds back then. More adrenalin and testosterone fueled excitement than these days.
Now much more of a cooperate affair, although when LS11 is really rocking it still gets the goose bumps going.
There is also still a wonderful feeling that comes with a perfect weekend of Leeds winning and Scum getting beaten.

Did you fall back in love with football under Bielsa? I know I did, football had become almost more of a chore than an enjoyment until he graced us with his presence.whiteswan wrote: ↑Tue Sep 24, 2024 12:05 am .....that I felt about football like I did in the 60/70's. Re: Sometimes I wish....
I'm quickly falling out with the way our pricing has gone through t' roof, £50 a home game is ridiculous.
I still hate whoever we are laking on a match day, and still hate moan utd more than anyone else.
The game is now mostly a corporate sanitised thing for families.

Re: Sometimes I wish....
Not sure where to ask this but here seems a good place as it’s a reminiscing thread…
My mate at work is an Everton fan but is also a football fan
His mate is/was a Leeds fan in the sixties and had a spare ticket for our first European Cup game (the famous 10-0 win v Lynn Oslo in 1969)
He’d been going through his football memorabilia and screen shot the ticket and showed it to me.
The price was 6/6 which he said was roughly 32 1/2p in ‘new money’ as everyone used to say.
I mentioned that it’s £40 a ticket now if you aren’t a season ticket holder, so my question is :
A - what was the equivalent wage to now in 1969
B - did you get more for your money then football-wise or is it roughly the same now?

No idea about wage equivalent though
I do believe you get more for your money now though. Stadiums are much better, facilities much better ( gone are the days of guys not bothering to walk to the toilets, and just pissed where they stood, or at least i hope that has changed

Re: Sometimes I wish....
Some 1960s salary details here, quite fascinating actually! Looking at £1200 for a policeman and £2300 for doctor, footballers not much more! I remember my dad pointing out Billy Bremner’s house to me, an average nice bungalow in Temple Newsam, I would say probably £400k tops today, nothing like Jack Harrison’s £5m pile.

Definitely better for families nowadays but I personally much preferred it when there was an uneasy tension in the air that things might kick off any minuteGreennWhite wrote: ↑Sat Oct 05, 2024 12:25 am Great question Finnatic![]()

Re: Sometimes I wish....
Interesting post swan. Thank you.
For me some aspects are worse, some better.
Like the increased professionalism where even the championship has players better than many other mational league 1 sides.
Stadia have improved immeasurably
Ability to track your team has never been better.
Don’t like.:
It cost a small fortune to watch live.
Cheating!! It’s everywhere dressed up in the veil of competition.
VAR - stops the honest integrity of the game
F@@@ing petulance of players who think they are something special (special mention to Christiano Ronaldo - amazingly skilled player but never a legend due to his shite selfish attitude).
The needless meddling in the game all in the spirit of “progress “.
There’s a reason I love leeds united ( not just my home town) but largely because I feel the fans are best anywhere! We try to keep the roots of or club honest. We call out crap behaviour. We value commitment before anything. And we are respected / feared by almost all other clubs in equal measure.

I hope 64 reads this as he probably went to the game and maybe was at a working age and can relate regarding salary etc

As a 15yo I was in my final year at school.
My first work salary was around £15 a week. I felt like I was in seventh heaven three years later working in music retail earning £37.50 a week. It's difficult to judge whether we were better off, we were certainly much happier & less stressed in those days.
We were relatively poor as a family growing up in the 50s/60s, but we wanted for nothing from our parents limited resources. I made my £1 pocket money go a long way. I recall paying 50p to watch Leeds United, I wasn't bothered about the poor facilities, standing on the open kop, often in freezing conditions & getting drenched at times.
Personally, I think my season-ticket now 60 years later is exceptional value, works out under £20 a game,
