It's interesting how Qatar is being judged when many 'gay' acts were still illegal in the UK as recently as 10 years ago.

Just to be clear, homosexuality is illegal in Qatar and punishable by a penalties ranging from flogging to imprisonment and execution,. I don't think it's accurate to imply that a similar regime existed in the UK until a decade ago, it downplays the reality in a regime where gay people are detained and beaten.

I also don't buy the argument that we should not say practices in another country are medieval and barbaric when they patently are. Or that travelling there means that criticism is wrong and that people have to pretend it's all grand and down to cultural differences. One remembers the old line about the triumph of evil when good men do nothing.

And the John Barnes claim that objecting to the brutal treatment of gay people is racist just shows yet again that footballers can be stupid. To substantiate a claim if racism, he would have to show that we regard the beating of gay people in western countries more favourably. Racism is not making a judgment, it's making a judgment on the basis of skin colour.

So the papers have undeniable evidence and speak to those parties involved. They come to an agreement that they will be given time before disclosure. That way they are slightly prepared and can tell those directly involved so it’s not so much of a shock.
