Match Thread Accrington Stanley v Leeds United U21 - EFL Trophy - MATCH THREAD

Accrington Stanley v Leeds United U21

Tuesday 8th September 7.00pm | EFL Trophy | Wham Stadium

Leeds United U21s will compete in the EFL Trophy for the first time on Tuesday evening following the granting of Category One status for the academy by the Premier League. Sixteen academy sides enter the EFL Trophy at Round One and for the 2020/21 season Leeds United are one of those sides. Drawn in group G our young players will compete against Barrow, Blackpool and first up Accrington Stanley at the Wham Stadium.

To fulfil the rules Leeds must have at least six of the starting eleven players who were aged under 21 as at the 30th and no more than two players who are aged 21 or over and have made 40 or more appearances in a First Team. With the U23 side expected to be held back for a training match against the first team later this week as they prepare to face Liverpool in the season opener on Saturday, a very young U18s side is expected to take the field against Accrington Stanley. Whilst many Leeds fans would have liked to have got an early look at the likes of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood, they may have to wait just a bit longer.

But Charlie Allen is in line to make his first competitive start for the Whites tonight after joining from Linfield in the summer. A number of players who featured in last season's FA Youth Cup run are also expected to play a part, including Cooper Skerry, Owen Bray and Josh Galloway who faced Manchester United at Old Trafford in February. John Coleman's Accrington Stanley will be hoping to go further than last season's quarter-final exit at the hands of Salford. Influential midfielder Joe Pritchard is a doubt after picking up a knock in the defeat to Burton, but can call upon recent arrivals Matt Butcher, Mo Sangare and Tariq Uwakwe.

Leeds United do have some recent history with the EFL Trophy, back in our League One days. It wasn’t a particularly successful competition for Leeds though and crowds as low as 8,000 turned out at Elland Road on cold Tuesday nights to watch. At their first attempt in 2007-08 Leeds lost to Bury in the quarter finals, in 2008-09 they were knocked out in the second round to Rotherham whilst in 2009-10 they beat this seasons opponents Accrington Stanley before losing in the Northern final on penalties to Carlisle United.

Match passes for the game are £10 on the Accrington Stanley iFollow site.

Leeds Starting XI
Skerry, Galloway, Sutcliffe, Kachosa, Leverett, Moore, Mullen, Bray, Pilkington, Allen, Dean

Subs: Chrsity, Chikukwa, Carole, Hughes, Teale, Littlewood, Coleman

It seems that Bielsa is holding back many of the U23 team that could play in this fixture for a full game against the senior team tomorrow. This means that there will be starts for a good few of the U18 squad, including Charlie Allen. Both Football Insider and Phil Hay on Twitter are referring to this.

While the senior teams’ needs are always a priority, I hope that Leeds progress in this competition as it gives proper competitive time to many U23’s that realistically won’t see much senior football time this season.

Result doesn't really matter for these lads, the experience however will. Will LUTV be covering this?

It seems that “invited” clubs cannot stream the game live. LUTV will have commentary and Accrington are selling an ifollow viewing option on their website. Details on the Leeds official website;

Should be some interesting selections today. Bielsa has pulled must of U-23's to play a competitive intra-squad friendly. We know that's very much a priority as Koch and Rodrigo need a decent game (Koch only played a few minutes for Germany). It's doubtful that Koch would get to play alongside Cooper since he just played 90 for Scotland yesterday.

We're going to see a lot of U-18s in the EFL. That's a bit of a shame, because I would like to see us progress. But good opportunity for our U-18 prospects. Can't wait to see the highlights.

Would've loved to see the likes of Kenneh, Cresswell, Gotts given some first team football, but it looks like a bunch of 16 year olds.

Good luck, hope they enjoy the experience.

Accrington 2 - 0 up after 20 minutes. This could get very ugly for a very young team. Accrington may feel a little disrespected seeing 16 and 17 year olds lining out against them.

Unnecessary to play such a weak side, disrespectful really to Accrington Stanleyand serves no purpose letting the kids (and thats what they are) get absolutely battered

Ive heard of none of our players aside from the new lad.

Could have played Kenneh, Greenwood, Davis, Roberts etc.

Saw a video of the players arriving, looked like they were on a school trip.

I agree, what's the point of entering if we aren't going to use it to get soem game time for the next batch through including Kenneh, Greenwood etc

Should have been a good opportunity for our young players to get a cup run here, instead the club’s put these young players in a difficult position

But isn't the whole point to develop young players? If it was a first team game we wouldn't be competing in it.

No idea.

Fully expected to see players like Kenneh, Greenwood, Gelhard, the young dutch keeper etc.

Disrespectful to the competition really.

If you apply to play something you should at least try.

We're plaing 16 year olds, is taking a pasing off Accrington Stanley going to be good for their development?

I'd rather have seen a fre of the 18-21 year old lads who are trying to break through to the first team squad over the next season or two.

These are kids mate.

They arent even u21 level.

Its not fair for the club to do this to them imo.

Dont know what the club were thinking tbh.
