Southampton have decided to sack manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
The Premier League side have agreed to sack the Austrian either during the World Cup break or before they play their final match before the tournament, against Liverpool at Anfield next Saturday.
Southampton had wanted to wait until the break before making a decision, but could now act sooner.
A dismal 4-1 defeat by Newcastle United at St Mary’s on Sunday leaves Southampton languishing in 18th place after just three Premier League wins from their opening 14 matches.
Hasenhuttl joined Southampton in December 2018 and has consistently kept the club in the Premier League.
They finished a creditable 11th in his first full season in charge after he replaced Mark Hughes, followed by two consecutive 15th-place finishes
He did, however, oversee two humiliating 9-0 defeats during his time in charge — one in 2019 against Leicester City and the other in 2021 against Manchester United.
Southampton were in desperate need of a performance on Sunday after three home games without a victory, but were a distant second best to Newcastle throughout the game.
Romain Perraud did pull one back after efforts from Miguel Almiron, Chris Wood and Joe Willock, only for Bruno Guimaraes to immediately overshadow his consolation goal with a tremendous long-range strike.
The full-time whistle was met with a chorus of boos from those fans who remained in the stadium until the bitter end.
Hasenhuttl, who previously managed RB Leipzig, has found himself under increased pressure in recent weeks and bristled at suggestions he could lose his job last month, following a 4-0 defeat by Manchester City, which was their fourth consecutive Premier League loss.
When asked whether he feared being sacked, Hasenhuttl said: “I have taken a lot of decisions since I’m here but I don’t have to take this one.”
Pressed on whether he sees a way out of the slump, he added: “No…. Not at the moment.”

Re: Southampton Thread - Hasenhuttl sacked
Gone this morning, after yesterday's 1-4 loss to Newcastle.
Not really a surprise though. Been on the cards for a while now.

Does that leave Jesse as the last Red Bull disciple in England?

Expected really, now I expect Gerrard to be named their next boss.
Shows how poor we were to throw away a 0-2 lead

And Hutentootel as ours
Hopelessly lost.................. But making good time
Re: Southampton Thread - Hasenhuttl sacked
Not a shock but he always seemed a fairly calm type, low key, not into ranting about refs or opponents. I thought he did a decent job at a club where survival has to be the height of their ambition.

I agree with that mountain, but it's a results business as we well know, just some clubs look to punch above their status and get carried away, that sacking could end up in relegation daft as it sounds.

It is amazing that he lasted as long as he did. The Saints fans were well fed up with him for quite a while.
This upcoming WC break will see a number of clubs making calls about their managers. All see it as an ideal break to bring in the new face and give them time to “fix” a team, conveniently followed by a transfer window.
I bet Jesse is doubly pleased now with our recent 6 point haul.

Wait months to get rid of a manager.
Play with dream appointments like massively successful Marcelo Gallardo or highly rated Bo Svensson or exciting hipster choice Kjetil Knutsen . . . . ..

Re: Southampton Thread - Hasenhuttl sacked
I think he's done a good job there and tried to play football, as well as use young players. He never was in a relegation battle or finished 17th. I'd happily have him here if we make a change.
Hopefully they appoint Nathan Jones, as that would be a massive downgrade.

That's exactly what would happen if we sacked Marsch tbh. Though it'd be Ryan Lowe instead

Didn't Nathan Jones leave Luton to go to Stoke a 2 or 3 years ago. Having done really well with Luton he bombed in The Potteries. Ended up going back to Luton, where he's doing well again and could again be off......grass isn't always greener, Nathan
Re: Southampton Thread - Hasenhuttl sacked
I think he'd be massively out of his depth in the PL, well I hope so for our sake. Done well at Luton, as there's no pressure or expectation to succeed, but he failed at Stoke with more expectant demands.Muppet the Cat wrote: ↑Mon Nov 07, 2022 2:29 pm Didn't Nathan Jones leave Luton to go to Stoke a 2 or 3 years ago. Re: Southampton Thread - Hasenhuttl sacked
Oh when the Saints. They must be up there as one of the most productive feeder clubs in the PL. A few years back Liverpool seemed to buy most of their players for big money, and other teams, it looks like its finally catching up with them. I can't see how Nathen Jones enhances them personally but from a British perspective i'd like to see him given another go.
