I've never had the pleasure of meeting any Quebecois. But I did live for seven years in an area of Northern Ontario that's a mixture of English, French and Italian Canadians, primarily.
I found the people I worked with were all friendly enough and helpful and a lot of these were French Canadians.
But Canadians, in general in that area, were very unfriendly and closed off to anyone different.
It's like they have their friends and family and why should they bother with immigrants.
I'm more than happy to be back in Europe, in Bulgaria, where people are open, friendly, and warm to everyone.
I wouldn't set foot on Canadian soil again, they're more than welcome to all of that snow and ice ;-)
Funnily enough I've visited America a few times and found the people to be very friendly and civil.

No, an engineering firm, you probably won't have heard of them. A lot of the managers in my team over there came from Bombardier though.

Can you imagine if Electoral fraud was found. The powder keg would have blown for good. With dissenting voices now only a fingertip away i don't envy Biden, or any political party for that matter. The beast is awake...Feed the beast.

Trump has been pushing the boundaries of what he can say and do and get away with since he came into office - actually even before this, during his election campaign - and once this was sanctioned by the electorate and tolerated by the Republicans as it suited them, so he just pushed on and on.

Then there was Charlottesville and the march on the Legislature in Michigan by armed thugs all with no serious law enforcement intervention. They knew they had a pass on whatever they wanted to do. So Capitol Hill was the obvious next step. The reaction of the police and (eventually) the National Guard yesterday has further confirmed they can do whatever they like and not even face arrest compare that to how BLM protesters were attacked with massive force and numbers for peaceful protest on the streets of Washington - not inside Government buildings. It’s unbelievable to most of us looking on. It’s probably not a surprise to the black community in the U.S.

The US has a narrow window to shut down this fascist movement because they are not going away and the Trump family intend to make the most of their alliance with them in the coming four years. Amazing to see how one family of twisted, spoilt brats can get to a position of believing they are utterly entitled to run the most powerful country in the world as a plaything.

 The rifts that were there in America have just been continually worsened by Trump. Fella is an absolute disgrace to the human race never mind America. As they saying goes "With great power comes great responsibility". He's never shown any responsibility, ethics, or humanity. The world would be a better place without him.

After 4 years of watching and listening to President Trump, 74 million Americans still voted for him to be president for another 4 years.
It seems unbelievable that the lying, immoral, orange criminal still maintains such support.
I don't know if you can watch the Murdoch owned propaganda machine Fox TV in the UK but the anger and hatred that is spewed out every night (the day time programming is mainly news with a right wing view point) is unbelievable. When you combine Fox with the conspiracy sites and right wing sites on the internet it really is surprising that it has taken this long for something like this to happen.
Trump will be gone but his supporters will still be there and Fox will continue to spread lies, hatred and incitement.
I really fear for the safety of Biden and other politicians. Truly worrying times ahead.

Very true BH, it does take time to ram home lies to any group of people and Murdoch, sadly, has previous experience of this. The other factor that helps is a poor standard of education generally, and in history specifically. Once you don’t know the facts of a story any mad invented reality is more easily believed.

“False words are not only evil, but they infect the soul with evil” Plato

While I would also completely agree with you about a fear for Biden’s safety, I think the fear of a black woman taking over as President may actually outweigh that mobs’ annoyance of an Irish Catholic being in charge!

Good riddance.

President or not, his venom has no place on Twitter, let alone anywhere.

Jan 20th cannot come soon enough. Seems Twitter could not even bear to wait two weeks longer.

I have just watched video coverage on one of the news channels(taken by his son in law) of Trump and a gang of his supporters sat in a tent with a bank of monitors actually watching the storming of the capital and encouraging them... his video release of him denouncing the rioters and saying he ordered the national gaurd to arms is all a sham... the man should be treated like Guy Fawkes

The answer, for me, lies in the systemic inequality which sees the wealth of billionaires continuing to grow, whilst the majority suffer.

The left long since gave up representing working class interests, so the far right step in to fill the void. Historically, the circumstances for the rise of fascism are always the same; a stagnated and disenfranchised working class. Vilifying individuals without recognising this misses the point imo.
Correct, and the harnessing of scapegoats for the disenfranchised to blame, in order to manipulate the electorate into voting for them. In the case of Trump: Immigrants (racism, xenophobia "they took our jobs!"), and "commies" (equal rights, the left wanting to increase taxes to fund universal healthcare and better welfare for the less fortunate). In the case of the Tories/Brexit: Immigrants (a little bit of xenophobic "they took our jobs!"), but mostly "bureaucracy" (fishing quotas and bendy bananas and EU contributions).

The irony with the both situation is that it is somewhat turkeys voting for Xmas and really it's all driven by the rich and corporations. With Trump, why would you vote against free healthcare for the less fortunate? With Brexit: Out of EU means a potential bonfire of workers rights, environmental standards, and the lowering of wages as Brits replace the lost EU immigrants but for lower wages, all to benefit the rich.

I have a facebook New Yorker female friend and a redneck male facebook friend and it is very interesting to see their completely different views. The New Yorker is anti Trump and the redneck is pro Trump. The New Yorker floods my facebook constantly and the redneck just post occasionally with his thoughts. The redneck today has posted that people should be getting ready for "something big" that is about to happen─ get water, supplies, batteries, ammunition etc ready!! I have no idea what this is? Maybe one of our Americans on here could enlighten us?
I'm going back to 505, I saw them at Sheffield and they were amazing.

Probably something to do with the inauguration I would have thought. To be honest, and perhaps I misinterpreted how you wrote your message, or I am not sure how close you are to the redneck 'friend', but if 'they' know something bad is being attempted, I'd consider reporting the post. I suspect they are just suspecting something will happen and I am just misreading your post, but if I am not misreading it?

That is exactly what is happening here.
But I don't think anyone is missing that point. Those conditions exist and the fascists have jumped on it and are employing an intense and successful campaign of misinformation and scare tactics. The movement here is being led by Fox TV (Murdoch), right wing radio talk shows and podcasts. It is then propagated on the myriad conspiracy theory web sites and all the social media platforms. i don't watch Fox out of choice but I do watch it sometimes to see what the other side are thinking. It is truly down right scary to listen to the evil, wicked, hateful lies that they spout out every single night for hours on end. Constant stream of hateful propaganda.
A lot of things that Trump tweeted about were first discussed on Fox. At one point it was suggested that Sean Hannity was the President and Vice President Trump would tweet out the leaders thoughts the next morning.
I'll say again, Trump might be gone but this is far from over.

Is this the same BobHirst who recently accused me of being a humourless lefty feminist... has someone hacked your account?
That must have been someone else. :)
Just because I had that opinion of you it doesn't mean I am a right wing loony. Far from it. I consider myself somewhere to the middle left of the political spectrum and see good and bad on both sides. I think a lot of people on the left have lost their sense of humor and in many cases are more censorial and self-righteous than people on the other side. It seemed to me that you could be one of those persons but as I previously stated I don't know you and can only go on my interpretation of what you post. If you say that's not really you then I'll have to accept that.
I have been wrong before :) .

I don't know about anyone else but I turned the TV on this morning and the sight of Air Force One flying away from Washington to Florida with Trump aboard brought a huge smile and sigh of relief from me.
Please do a good job Mr. President.
