The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 1st May) - They think it's all over...
Good Morning. It's Wednesday 1st May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...
They think it's all over...
Leeds must beat Southampton on Saturday and hope Huddersfield Town pull off a miracle at Portman Road, if Leeds are to get promoted automatically this season. The Tractor Boys eased past Coventry City 2-1 last night, courtesy of goals from Kiefer Moore and Cameron Burgess, and went three points ahead of the Whites, ahead of the season finale on Saturday. Leeds still have a superior goal difference, meaning if everything goes their way at the weekend, promotion is theirs!
As things stand, Leeds will face Baggies in Play off's
As things stand, Leeds will face West Brom in the Semi Final's of the play-offs later this month. The Baggies need a point at home against Preston to guarantee sixth place, and put a stop to Hull City's late charge for a play off place. Similarly, a win against the Lilywhites could see West Brom leapfrog Norwich City who must beat Birmingham City to stay fourth, and face a show down with Southampton.
Kiefer Moore made a massive difference
Leeds will by now be regretting their blatant disregard towards the loan system, made more prominent by Ipswich Town taking full advantage. The Tractor Boys bought four new players into their squad in January, including Kiefer Moore (7 goals) and Ali Al Hamadi (4 goals). Moore in particular has been instrumental for Kieran McKenna's side. His hold up play is exceptional, he's the best headerer in the Championship, and with a Whoscored rating of 7.31 (1st), has had a major impact for Ipswich Town.

Why should we need Kiefer Moore when we have Bamford ?

Is Paddy a top 15 striker in this division? We have held back from getting in strikers in the past because we have Bamford

DF will need to start with a strong side just in case a miracle happens at Portman Road but once Ipswich get a couple of goals in front, which is likely to be before half time, he should start introducing the fringe players to give them a good run before the play offs.
The play offs will be tough whoever we play but we definitely owe West Brom one as they took 4 points off us.
No point now worrying about what might have been, Ipswich stayed the course better than us, and based on the fact they have only lost 6 out of 45 games, they deserve promotion.
Let's hope we can get through Saturday's virtual dead rubber injury free

Moore adds something different. He's a big lump (just like me), can hold the ball up, and is a fantastic headerer of the ball

Kieffer Moore Played 17 Goals 7
Joel Piroe Played 29 Goals 11
Patrick Bamford 23-24 Played 33 Goals 8, 22-23 Played 28 Goals 4, 21-22 Played 9 Goals 2
So PB in the last three seasons has played 70 matches and scored 14 goals. Apparently that's good enough to be number 9 at Leeds
Have people forgotten how good Allan Carke, Lee Chapman, or Mark Viduka were? Or even Jermaine Beckford?
Cos a top striker doesn't produce the statistics that Bamford has.
The statistics for Meslier are even worse, yet both of them are continually defended by our supporters and automatic first team choices unless injured or suspended. I wouldn't give the pair of them house room.

We're not used to our striker doing that Or our goalie saving goals
Better striker and goalie and we would have pissed promotion this season.

8 goals in 1487 minutes of game time is around a goal every other game, though you have to take into account Leeds create more chances than most other championship clubs. The Subhuman wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 8:02 am Is Paddy a top 15 striker in this division? I'm also not sure a top 15 striker would be good enough to lead the line for a promoted club, though Summerville has of course added a shell load...

The Patrick Bamford cycle
Paddy scores a screamer/great goal, boosts his confidence - Paddy plays well for 2/3 games - Paddy stops scoring, becomes belligerent - Paddy plays a few games as a spoiler but misses sitters and confidence is now low - 9/10 games later, Paddy scores a screamer
Meslier is a strange one, he's had 5 managers for us now and I still keep expecting someone to teach him how to catch a football and positioning. Does make some cracking saves but doesn't every keeper ?
I agree with Riot, the two ends of the field are probably the issue for us. Fingers crossed Paddy scores early against Brom or Norwich and starts that sequence again, he's probably due. We must hope so because we've missed multiple chances to blood Joseph and it's too late now and PIROE AIN'T A STRIKER
Can we last recall when Mes last played a "blinder" ..don't think it's this season, almost certainly not last

Aye, not the greatest ever player, but scored goals, was physical, held the ball up and was a great foil for Rod Wallace. We've forgotten what a great striker looks like.
I'm not a fan of mediocrity.

Chapman was awful to watch but effective I guess. Rodrigo was our last good one WHEN he actually played as striker and not a winger or false 9 or 10! He would have walked this division

One blinding performance from either Meslier, or Bamford, and we probably go up this season. We might have had a blinding performance from Klaesson, or Joseph but they haven't been played.

Oh to have an in his prime Mark Viduka playing for us again. The bloke was different juice when he was on it.White Riot wrote: ↑Wed May 01, 2024 8:40 am Kieffer Moore Played 17 Goals 7

Ipswich had what we haven't ... the will to win, to get it over the line. However nervous they were at making mistakes so close to the end of the season, their will to get into the Premiership was greater than ours. That's what it boils down to!

They've not really had to deal with the low block, teams play to win against Ipswich which opens them up and Ipswich exploit that. We could have done better tactically imo against that ugly tactic but I doubt Ipswich get close to 90 points if teams employed it against them

Congratulations to Ipswich, they fully deserve to go up. They had a few small wobbles but mainly stayed strong all season and when you think they did the same the season before, hats off to them for what they have achieved.
Dont think anyone will begrudge them their chance with the big boys next season, but they will have to get used to loosing more than they win and will probably get a few tankings, if they dont improve the squad. Its going to be interesting to see how many of the current squad from the last 2 seasons are kept on for next season. Will blind loyalty be their undoing or will they be ruthless and ditch the players that got them this far ?

Good luck to Ipswich.
Not many gave them a chance at the start of the season.
Our major problem was not cleaning up against lower opposition. Footballing sides in the main, didn’t give us the issues the park the bus teams did.
This has to be down to the tactics and an over reliance on Bamford when Joseph warranted more of a chance.
This season has a freaky similarity to Bielsa’s first season in that we bogged it in our final home games.
Let’s hope next season follows the same pattern.
