Nice to see Poveda catching up with his mates.
Probably still hoping to get a league winners medal

10 in 12 without playing well. These are the kind of games we were drawing and losing in the first half of the season.

How come we were 10 times better in the second half?

Re: Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds United - Post Match Chat
Posted this is the match thread right before the game but it got lost. Seems relevant given Amp's great longs balls this match.
I think what's interesting about the "slow build up" vs. "direct attack" approaches is that were actually tied for first in the league with 76 direct attacks (Plymouth Argyle is who we're tied with). The other top four teams fall in this order overall:
Tied for 4th: Leicester - 55
6th: Soton - 51
7th: Ipswich - 50
In terms of the direct attack, which in this case is considered, "...the number of open play sequences that starts just inside the team's own half and has at least 50% of movement towards the opposition's goal and ends in a shot or a touch in the opposition box," we seem to be far outpacing the other top four teams.
In terms of "build up attacks," or "...the number of open play sequences that contains 10 or more passes and either ends in a shot or has at least one touch in the box," we rank third overall:
1st: Soton - 210
2nd: Leicester - 167
3rd: Leeds - 122
8th: Ipswich - 80
Closely related to the build-up play is the number of "10+ pass sequences" we have:
1st: Soton - 775
2nd: Leicester - 726
4th: Leeds - 532
10th: Ipswich - 358
In my professional analysis (using this very loosely here), as frustrating as the sideways passes can be, the "tikik taka" football could be much worse
Would I like to see even more long balls and cross fields switches of play--yes. However, overall, based on the numbers it seems like DF is getting the balance pretty perfect, especially when compared to the other top four teams.

As ridiculous as it sounds, it feels like we need another crazy winning run to have a chance of the top 2.

We were better for the last 10 of the first half. But the goal really killed off Weds. We were able to control the game once we had the lead.whiteinfrance wrote: ↑Fri Mar 08, 2024 10:02 pm How come we were 10 times better in the second half?

Good three points and have to say despite not been up to our usual standard 7 from 9 is a good week. Tough for Southampton looking at a 9 point gap even with 2 games in hand.
Goal difference could still come in to it with Ipswich and ours is a lot better.
