Re: Album of 2019 - Azkal, Billie, Durly, Norfolk to NOMINATE
Thanks for the Red info, Sara.
I’ve heard it on a couple of KCCC live albums, from some 1995 (?) gigs.
Good, but something lacking, possibly the energy and precision that new live songs have when played after album release.
That’s why I would have liked to hear the ‘74 line-up live versions

Oh, sorry, I thought you were wanting it by the current lineup, with the three drummers... their best live imo.Finnatic wrote: ↑Wed Jan 06, 2021 9:01 pm Thanks for the Red info, Sara.

Going to have to play the Purple Mountains again, still don't know if I like it or dislike it. Found it like twiglets, not sure but couldn't stop.

Re: Album of 2019 - VOTE NOW
Didn't like it at all, vocals were flat which is ok if it works and it doesn't here...Music bit too bland for my liking and lyrics didn't interest me ..It's inoffensive but I don't waste time on inoffensive
Sorry

Feel really conflicted about Ghosteen. On the one hand it's beautiful and incredibly moving, and a huge testament to a personal grief. It's been compared with CS Lewis's A Grief Observed, and that stands up totally.
On the other, it's just someone being unbearably sad to what sounds like a backing track of 1980s relaxation tapes, and I'm not sure I ever want to hear it again. I couldn't not vote for it, but it loses out to, perhaps, simpler music, which packages its emotions in a more palatable form. I'm glad Ghosteen exists, and I acknowledge its achievement, but I'd rather jump around to Starcrawler, or have suicidal ideation with Billie.
Starcrawler is the take away from this year, the one that's new to me, and I've been playing it non-stop ever since; it's such a pure piece of rock n roll. Lana Del Ray and Aldous Harding were best of the rest, for me. Decent, and I'll play them again, but probably won't buy. Also liked FKA Twigs.

I know what you're saying about Ghosteen, I really have to be in the mood for it, otherwise it can just pass you by, but when the mood does take, it's a great piece of work but for me not anywhere near as emotive as Skeleton Tree.SaraM wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 12:02 pm Billie Eilish

I really love LDR's voice, it's one that can really draw you in, Aldous is a goddess here.
Re: Album of 2019 - VOTE NOW
I feel NC's crossed an undefined boundary from music into poetry... again, just my personal take, and how I approach it. There comes a point where it's really about the words, and the wafty soundtrack actually detracts, rather than adds.gessa wrote: ↑Tue Jan 12, 2021 12:09 pm I know what you're saying about Ghosteen, I really have to be in the mood for it, otherwise it can just pass you by, but when the mood does take, it's a great piece of work but for me not anywhere near as emotive as Skeleton Tree.

It's a fine line... Leonard Cohen stays just on the musical side of it, because his voice and melodies carry the words. That's not quite happening with Ghosteen, it's too spoken, too detached from the music. Skeleton Tree is closer to the borderline.
Again, I'm not trying to set up arbitrary distinctions between music and poetry, it's just how I experience it.
