News Article The Biggest Tests Upcoming Tests For All Three Championship Title Hopefuls

Post by YorkshireSquare »

The race for promotion from the Championship this season has been epic. Yes, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City are garnering all the headlines for their three-way battle for the Premier League title, but in the second tier, the race has been just as impressive. Leeds United, Leicester City, Ipswich Town and Southampton have all been fighting tooth and nail for the top two automatic promotion places and with just five games remaining this term, it still remains unknown as to which two teams will secure their spot in the top flight.

Former Elland Road loanee Jermaine Pennant recently stated that he felt all three relegated teams from last term would secure promotion. But Ipswich are still there fighting away, and their stunning 3-2 comeback victory against Southampton at Portman Road left them in pole position for automatic promotion. However, they followed that up with a defeat against local rivals Norwich City dropping them to second, while Leeds' defeat at Coventry has them in third.

Leicester City are once again top of the pile and with a game in hand on their rivals, they are now the heavy favourites for the title. And with Southampton having two games in hand on the top three, they too could throw their name into the hat in the promotion race. But as it stands, it will be two of the top three that secure promotion, and here are their toughest games between now and the end of the season.

Leicester City

The Foxes have plenty of winnable fixtures on the horizon, with the fixture against lowly Plymouth Argyle looking particularly simple. However, one test that won't be is the visit of Southampton on April 23rd. The Saints are one of the form teams in the division and they know that if they win their two games in hand – with this being one of them – then they are right back in the hunt for the title.

Ipswich Town

The Tractor Boys only secured promotion from League One last season and they are looking immediately to go back-to-back. As such, every game for them between now and the end of the campaign is a cup final, but the trip to Coventry City on April 30th in the penultimate campaign is the big one. The Sky Blues are on the hunt for the playoffs themselves and they have proven they can beat anybody with their recent victory against Leeds. They will be aiming to do the same against Ipswich.

Leeds United

Finally, we have Leeds United. Despite being currently in third place, the bookies also have them earmarked as one of the favourites for the top two. Their toughest test is also against Southampton in a mouth-watering clash that takes place on the final day of the campaign. Should the Saints continue in their current vein of form, that could be an all-or-nothing clash for both sides with promotion on the line.
