Reflecting on Terry Venables' Leeds United Era
Today we learned of the passing of Terry Venables. Born in Dagenham on 6th January 1943, Terry Venables left school in 1957 and began his football journey as an apprentice with Chelsea. After gaining Schoolboy international honors with England, he turned professional in August 1960. Venables played for England at amateur and Youth levels, making his debut in the 1959/60 season, and, remarkably for his age, quickly became a regular player. Apart from Chelsea's relegation season of 1961/62, he was a virtual ever-present for the next six seasons.
After a playing career that spanned Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, and Crystal Palace, Venables transitioned into management by succeeding Malcolm Allison at Crystal Palace. Following managerial stints at Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona, and Tottenham Hotspur, he took on the England job, famously leading the national team to the semi-finals of Euro 96. After managing Australia briefly, he returned to England, starting with his first club Crystal Palace, before helping Middlesbrough survive relegation in 2001.
In July 2002, Venables joined Leeds United as Manager. Despite inheriting a squad arguably stronger than the one that had qualified for the UEFA Champions League two years earlier, Leeds' disastrous financial problems became evident. Club captain Rio Ferdinand was sold to Manchester United just a fortnight into Venables' appointment. Although Leeds had a strong start to the League campaign, winning their first two games, injuries mounted, and the season began to unravel.
By December of that year, Leeds had crashed out of both the League Cup and the UEFA Cup, languishing in the bottom half of the table with increasing debt. Player sales in January 2003, including Jonathan Woodgate and Robbie Keane, further weakened the team without Venables being consulted. Despite a mini-revival, Leeds spiraled towards relegation, leading to Venables' sacking in March 2003 amid rumors of additional player sales.
Leeds temporarily turned their fortunes around under Peter Reid, securing safety with a remarkable 3-2 win away to reigning EPL Champions Arsenal. However, continued player sales to offset the club's debt eventually led to Reid's departure and the relegation of the club. Venables' time at Leeds was undoubtedly marked by his coaching talent, but he faced insurmountable challenges due to the club's financial troubles, ultimately resulting in an unceremonious end to his tenure.
Leeds fans, for the most part, don't lay blame on Terry Venables for the club's decline. Despite some discontent over decisions like dropping Nigel Martyn, Venables, celebrated for his success with the England national team, is seen as a manager caught in circumstances beyond his control. His tenure at Leeds symbolized the broader decline of the once-great club. The nostalgic fondness for Venables as a successful England manager sharply contrasts with the somber reality of Leeds United's descent during his brief time at the helm.

Problem with ridsdale is that he was too much of a leeds fan and the club overstretched itself by spending too much money to get into champions league. The manager however could not deliver and all that money had to be paid back.
A businessman would never have take such a risk....but I don't recall any leeds fan saying we can't afford to buy top players.
I had a vip ticket at the game against deportivo and no man was ever as proud of his team as Peter was that day
Under ridsdale, we lived the dream and was within a 40 yard 93rd minute free kick by macallister from success

I always felt that if Ridsdale’s gambles had paid off we’d have the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal looking enviously at us right now.
