They were influential in the world of commercial music, largely through causing a huge influx of money from those looking to find the next big thing. This investment facilitated the creative period of the late 60s to mid 70s, because it gave artists the freedom to experiment.

That isn't the entirety of the 'music world' though. Great innovation had been going on for a long time before the Beatles, in jazz and classical music, from far superior musicians than the Beatles. Gospel, soul, blues, rock' n roll, folk and country... whole genres and movements which also underpinned the development of western popular music.

The Beatles were just one band who had some catchy hits, and were in the right place and the right time to rise to popularity due to the social changes occurring throughout the sixties. Their significance as musicians is hugely overstated by those who were swept up in the excitement of those times. They were far more of a social phenomenon than a musical one.
You are quite entitled to your opinion, Sara.

So opinions and conjecture, then.

Lots of people will claim to be 'influenced' by them because they were so famous, and other bands wanted to be like that too.

That's a different conversation from my point, which was about what they actually achieved musically, and whether that was particularly unique or innovative.

Well we have got 64 doing a lot of research.
Some of those influenced by the Beatles
Black Sabbath- don’t here much of the Beatles in their music
Kiss - started out a rock band that turned to disco and worse
Nirvana - other than Smells Like Teen Spirit the best thing Cobain released was the safety latch on his gun
Oasis - just a poor man’s Beatles
Joe Walsh from the Eagles - more middle of the road than the white line
The Toss (Springsteen ) - most overrated singer of all time
Lady Gaga - no comment needed

I'm not Nirvana's biggest fan but they were much better than just Teen Spirit, in fact Teen Spirit wouldn't make a Nirvana playlist for me...

Sgt Peppers has Lovely Rita, Fixing a Hole, When I'm 64 on it. That's 3 throw away awful tracks on it at least. Sgt Peppers reprise can be left off too

It's 50% a great album 50% poor ...

A Day in the Life and the great She's Leaving Home carry the whole album really .

Yes, I know you're a fan. I'm trying to make a distinction between their popularity and commercial success, and their actual quality as musicians.

No doubt their fame gave rise to the massive expansion of the music industry, but that's not the same as saying they really pushed the boundaries of music any more than their contemporaries.

Shall I start a thread on it, to save from derailing this one?

A fan since I was 8 years old.

Aye, you could do, though I think we have already derailed this thread.

No doubt, it would give me a laugh

I don't need to do research, Shaun, I know how influential The Beatles were, as a kid they influenced me, the first band I adored.
