Re: O/T The Music Discussion Thread
ATTENTION PLEASE!
Thanks to EVERYONE for making our move here such a resounding success! We even have a poll at last!
However, the amazing response to this thread does take up a lot of bandwidth, which needs to be paid for...so PLEASE take the time to click on just one of our google ads every day!
Takes 10 seconds to let it load, read it...then click back to MOT. This really DOES help keep our site costs down.
Thank you!

Genesis after Gabriel were a glorified pop band, so you can assume it's whilst Gabriel was still aroundTwiggster wrote: As I posted above...WHICH Genesis? Unless you considered them both to be prog rock? In which case, OK!

This could be over by Sunday evening & we can begin another poll - quick turnover eh Faaip
Predictable Top 2 from '64 in the Wolds, have albums by the majority of nominees, so difficult where to allocate my points
5 pts - Wally
4 pts - Wishbone Ash
3 pts - Pink Floyd
2 pts - Caravan

Just watching a re-run of Later/Jools to see what the Drive By Truckers are all about & to my surprise the legendary soul legend Bobby Womack is doing an acoustic number on my screen, the man is a genius

No points for the most extravagant noodlers of Prog Rock - Emerson, Lake & Palmer :shoot:
Never bought their vinyl, have no cd's on my shelves
Would send me to insanity if i had to listen to Mr Flash twiddling on his keyboards

Wiki has Man down as Progressive rock
As for Wally you are right they are not purely a Prog band as there albums contain different genres
The Martyr, To The Urban Man & The Reason Why are most definitely Prog
Sunday Walking Lady & Nez Perze are Soft rock
Surfing is Reggae/Rap - nah, more of an Otway style stream of consciousness
She Said & I Just Wannaa be a Cowboy are Country
Sister Moon & Till The Thrill Is Gone are just Rock as are many of their songs
Defining Wally is very difficult but they have recorded 40 minutes over 3 songs of Prog i hope Faaip will give them the benefit of doubt - btw none of the songs on their new album Montpellier are Prog - I'd put a vote in for Sailor, definite prog overtones
Music so wishes to be heard that it sometimes calls on unlikely characters to give it voice...

So while I catch up on the 7 pages since my last viewing, may I point you in the direction of the most frustrating prog band of recent years. They produced the most exciting debut album (for me) since the 70's in "Seven". They don't want to sell their albums, they don't want publicity, they just want to play - which is most discouraging for me. All of a sudden, they are all over Youtube, and Amazon is stocking their back catalogue. May I introduce you to Magenta, and the delectable and pure sound of Christina Booth.
Back in a while, when I've caught up.
Really enjoyed the Magenta you sent me. Magpie music at its best
