Leeds Utd v Norwich City Match Thread
Thursday 16th May 8:00pm | Elland Road
Leeds must see off Norwich City on Thursday night if they want to progress to the play-off final against either Southampton or West Brom, in what will be their biggest game in both their recent histories! After keeping the Canaries caged during the first leg, home advantage gives the Yorkshire outfit a slight edge. Up until the International Break, Leeds were undefeated at home but back to back defeats against Blackburn and Southampton may give David Wagner a glimmer of hope.
Patrick Bamford has been ruled out of the second leg. The 30 year old forward has ben out of action since bruising his knee during the 4-3 win at Middlesbrough last month, but a new diagnosis shows a minor trauma in his patellar tendon which connects the bottom of the kneecap (patella) to the top of the shinbone (tibia).
His absence will have givenLeeds boss Daniel Farke a major selection dilemma. But with the absence of Sam Byram, Archie Gray returns to right back with Georginio Rutter to the No.10 role and Joel Piroe up front. As much as the fans were calling for it, it would have been too much of a risk to throw Joseph Matteo into the starting line-up after just 220 minutes of league game time all season.
Dan James and Connor Roberts have overcome their respective injuries but are more likely to start on the bench. Pascal Struijk and Stuart Dallas are once again ruled out! The visitors will be without the services of Onel Hernandez (foot) and Liam Gibbs (thigh). Veteran striker Ashley Barnes is doubtful with a calf injury, though leading scorer Josh Sargent is expected to shake off an ankle injury he picked up in the closing stages of the first leg on Sunday.
The first leg of the Leeds United vs Norwich City play-off was an uneventful affair, ending in a 0-0 draw. Despite the lack of excitement, the result was not entirely unfavorable for Leeds. Manager Daniel Farke set up his team to avoid a loss and halt their recent slide, a strategy that succeeded in preventing a defeat. Norwich had hoped for a win, especially considering their stronger home form, but they were unable to capitalize on their advantage.
Will Norwich City adopt a defensive stance, aiming to frustrate Leeds and hit on the counter-attack? Or will they opt for a more aggressive approach? Leeds must decide whether to take a cautious approach or go all out for victory. Adding to the tension is the fact that Leeds have lost the last two play-offs where the second leg was at home, a bit of trivia that adds a layer of psychological complexity to the match.

Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
In some ways. the formation we played yesterday was a bit of a masterstroke by DF because there's no way Norwich would have expected us to line up like that. They would have been expecting Piroe and probably with Gray at RB.
DF went in with mindset of 'lets not lose' and that's exactly what he got.
We controlled things in the second half without testing their keeper much.
Interesting to see if DF changes things on Thursday. Rutter was really poor again and his place must be in jeopardy.

A reminder of the Leeds team that played Chelsea. No Summerville or Gnonto and still we scored two goal which must prove something.
Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
The gloves are off.... we are at home and its up to us to win it in 90mins. Simple for me. Get rich or die trying. Attack attack attack from minute one through to the end. Lets show West Brom what they are in for down in London. Wait a minute did someone say London...
Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
Let's go all out and be two up after first 30 minutes......a bit fed up with the tippy tippy pass the ball with no purpose style of play ! Rutter may or may not turn out to be a good player but on his current form I would bench him.
Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
Really looking forward to this one as the last play off match at ER was an absolute epic.
Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
No epic wanted for me thank you, a simple, boring 5-0 Leeds win will do nicely

Keep it tight at the back, fight for the ball in midfield and look for the lucky break up front

Makes me laugh that someone is worried about Mes if we go to pens - the worry is who is going to score - conversion is more critical. Anyone have faith in Geo to convert his if he takes one. After Piroe, Summerville and Gnonto it would be a real lottery.

Mes has no record against pens so you should rightly be concerned.
BTW at the other end we are as good as any

I'd be very concerned.
Our shooting is abysmal at times, the pressure of penalties would get to them.
How would Dan James feel after his miss for Wales?

If it goes to penalties I hope DF instructs all the penalty takers to do a Panenka

A chance to redeem himself?
He did score a pen in the final of the Europa League a few years back.
Im more concerned with our keeper, he usually just falls on his arse, he puts no pressure on the taker

His absence will give Leeds boss Daniel Farke a major selection dilemma. He obviously doesn't fancy Joel Piroe, Rutter is not a goal scorer and it would be too much of a risk to throw Joseph Matteo into the starting line-up after just 220 minutes of league game time all season.
Reverting to a five man midfield (like Farke did at Carrow Road on Sunday) may be an option, but without a centre forward to spear-head the side, where will the goals come from. Leeds have no new injury concerns.

Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
As others have said, an early goal is key. If we score, then Norwich's game plan, which most suspect will be defensive and hoping to nick a goal, will have to change. This should play to our strengths (on the basis that we turn up on the night). If they score first, and the crowd get restless, then we could be in for a long night.

Re: Norwich 2nd leg pre match chat
You might remember my concern in January that Rutter was the one player we couldn't afford to lose through injury as he's irreplacable and absolutely vital to how we play as an attacking force. Unfortunately we've now lost him to loss of form instead which is even worse as it's like playing with one player less most of the time and my question is why ?
Is it possible Farke has overcoached him, or at least confused his mindset to such an extent he just can't function and in the process has lost that carefree player who lit up ER and had us all purring about him being world class ? No doubt fans will remember after one of Georginio's most accomplished performance Farke admonishing him and talking about respecting the opponent and not showboating.
I'm concerned in the extreme that a player can go from such heights to now at times looking like he's not even good enough to play professional football and it surely cannot just be down to his groin surgery which was nearly 2 months ago now.
