Wolves 2-4 Leeds Utd - No sight of MENTAL after the Wolves game!!!
Saturday 18th March 3:00pm | Molineux Stadium
Leeds travel down to Wolves at the weekend, in search of just their second away victory of the season, as their quest for top flight survival goes on. You have to go back, all the way to last October, when Rodrigo and Summerville pulled off something of a coup by recording a 2-1 victory over Liverpool in their own back yard. Few would have expected that nearly five months on, Leeds have yet to replicate a league win, away from Elland Road.
By comparison, Wolves had a worse start to their season than the Whites. By the time the World Cup took place, Julen Lopetegui's side were bottom of the table, and odds on favourites for relegation. Going into the New Year, they only fared slightly better, but since then, the Wanderers have picked up 14 points, lifting them to 13th place in the table.
Leeds will be seething, having lost the services of anchor man Tyler Adams. The 24yo picked up a hamstring injury in training, and will be missing for an undetermined amount of time. Fellow USA International Weston McKennie will fill the void, playing alongside Marc Roca. Brenden Aaronson, Jack Harrison and Wily Gnonto start in the more advanced midfield roles. Stuart Dallas, Adam Forshaw and Liam Cooper all remain sidelined. Javi Gracia will be heartened by the return of Patrick Bamford, Luis Sinisterra, Rodrigo and Archie Gray in recent weeks. All (except Gray) are expected game time on Saturday with Bamford starting up front.
Wolves will be without the services of Sasa Kalajdzic (knee), Francisco Oliveira (knee), Hugo Bueno (thigh) and Diego Costa (knee). Boubacar Traore and Pablo Garcia face late fitness tests, but should at least make the bench.

Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds Utd Match Thread
Certainly no reason to be fearful of Wolves, been more and more reliant on individuals as the Premier League seasons have gone on.
Similar to Crystal Palace imo, very reliant on individual players performing rather than a team.
Create very little but are OK as a defensive unit with some talented individuals.
Personally I'd go Similar to Brighton first 20 minutes.
Let Wolves have the ball and sit back, they aren't a particularly creative team and may be a way to frustrate them and the crowd and force them to get careless and let us hit them on the break.
This for me is a must win, we simply have to beat the teams in our mini league.

I like it. But could also see Javi doing a 180 and going with a full high press for the first 20 min to try to get that first goal and then play for the counter to get a second (and third, etc.) for the balance.Cjay wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 1:36 pm Certainly no reason to be fearful of Wolves, been more and more reliant on individuals as the Premier League seasons have gone on.

Agree this is a winnable fixture and I doubt that fact is lost on Javi. I trust that he’ll come up with the best game plan to maximize our chances for the full three points.
Very curious to see how he’ll approach this game.

Would anyone take 1 point? Hard one: isolated a draw would seem o.k., but in the context of our situation...think I woud take 1 point, meaning within the next games some 100% must wins required.

Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds Utd Match Thread
Happy Paddy’s Day everybody.
I’ve reluctantly predicted a draw for this one which I’d take, but we will have few better chances to strike fear into those around us than Saturday, so I’m hoping we can pull off the 3 points.
Losing Adams is certainly serious, hopefully not critical.

Adams injured is a serious problem, the most consistent player & romping our MOTM competition by a country mile.

Could you tell me exactly what you mean by this- you seem to use the 'must win' term a lot. Must be a different meaning to what my interpretation is.Cjay wrote: ↑Thu Mar 16, 2023 1:36 pm Certainly no reason to be fearful of Wolves, been more and more reliant on individuals as the Premier League seasons have gone on.

Everton and forest were apparently 'must wins' whereas in hindsight draws against those sides and we would be above both of them now. Same tomorrow, I believe a draw would be an ok result and keeps them within 4 points (with worse GD). I would consider it a ' preferably not lose' game.
ps. I got a good feeling about tomorrow
Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds Utd Match Thread
We won't beat Wolves
Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds Utd Match Thread
Well we have 12 games left and we 'must win' at least four of them to have any chance of staying up. In reality it is only 10 games as very little chance of anything from the Emirates or Etihad.Madron wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 1:42 pm Could you tell me exactly what you mean by this- you seem to use the 'must win' term a lot. Using that rather garbled logic , every game from the first game of the season is a 'must win' game.

‘Must-Win’ Is Losing All Meaning

NEW YORK, NY - APRIL 20: Carmelo Anthony #7 of the New York Knicks celebrates a three point basket in the second half as Jeff Green #8 of the Boston Celtics looks on during Game One of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals of the 2013 NBA Playoffs on April 20, 2013 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The New York Knicks defeated the Boston Celtics 85-78. After beating the Celtics in Game 1 of the opening round of the NBA playoffs on Saturday despite a mediocre performance, the Knicks will look to go up 2-0 tonight at the Garden. Sports reporters, looking to hype up the game as much as humanly possible — as is their wont — are now asking players on both teams whether tonight’s game qualifies as a “must-win.”
Now, technically, only an elimination game is really a “must-win” — you literally must win to prolong your season. But a non-stickler definition of “must-win” would encompass games that are merely extremely important to win. For the Celtics, you could argue that tonight represents such a game. In all of NBA history, only fifteen teams — something like 6 percent — have come back from 2-0 deficits to win a best-of-seven playoff series, so the chances are that, if the Celtics lose tonight, they will never recover.
But the Celtics’ Jeff Green went beyond calling tonight’s game a “must-win.” To him, every playoff game is a must-win.
That’s a good mind-set to be in. (Ideally, you would have that mind-set for every game, whether in the regular season or playoffs.) But it’s wrong. Every playoff game is not a must-win. Game 1 certainly wasn’t. If it were, the Celtics, having lost it, would already be doomed.
Carmelo Anthony, for his part, says the Knicks are “approaching this game as a must-win here on our home court.” Again, that’s fine from a motivational standpoint, but let’s be clear: This game is in no way a “must-win” for the Knicks. Losing would certianly be worse than winning, but they would still be in a good position to beat the Celtics, a lowly seventh seed, if they headed to Boston tied 1-1. If tonight’s game is a “must-win” for the Knicks, the label has officially lost all meaning.
Its meaningless hyperbole.

The bottom 8 or 9 are in a mini league now.
We need to start beating teams in it starting with Wolves
Don't think a point at a relegation rival at this stage is enough
Save those for the Man City, Arsenal games etc
Teams in the relegation mix are must win.

Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds Utd Match Thread
Last season we didn't actually have a single 'must win' match. The closest we came was the final match of the season but even if we'd have drawn that we'd have stayed up.
Re: Wolverhampton Wanderers v Leeds Utd Match Thread
Using the word 'must' implies there is a direct consequence of not winning. There isn't any consequence other than making staying up harder.Cjay wrote: ↑Fri Mar 17, 2023 3:53 pm We have had a good set of results around us.

If we have 10 'must win' games left ,that's 30 'must get' points. We don't need 30 .
Like I said draws in the 'must win' Everton and Forest games, in hindsight would have been good results.
.
I might appear to be a bit pedantic but language misuse does irk me a bit

We have to secure 15 more points for a decent chance of safety. To do this we simply have to start winning games. This one will not decide the season but the sooner we start gathering wins, which are critical for safety, the better for us.
It also shifts pressure onto other teams, like Wolves. Let them deal with the psychological pressure that comes from, poor form and the doubt and fear that comes from slipping down the table.

Maybe "must win" is like "bangin" and "wicked" and Bro (when they aint) and all them new fangled phrases distorting the English Language.
