Last Man Standing 2022/2023 - Last Round of the Year
Welcome (back) to the Last Man Standing competition!
Since our return to the EPL this competition has suffered from having so many people select one of the top teams at the same time. Because City, Liverpool and the like win such a high percentage of their games, players were rewarded for picking one of those teams while players who were a bit more adventurous were eliminated early and then had to wait weeks to get back in. As a result, their interest waned and by the end of the season participation was down to roughly half of what it was at the start of the season.
I've given this a good deal of thought and I'm proposing a rules change. I bring it up now, two weeks out, to give everyone an opportunity to provide me with feedback so we can agree upon a set of rules that meets with general approval before we start.
Here are the rules of the competition for those who are new to the game (the proposed changes are in bold print):
I will post a list of the week's fixtures. Players will pick a team to win from the week's matches. Winning teams/players stay in the competition, those that lose or draw are eliminated. No player may select a team from the "big six" (City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham, Scum) in the first week of any new round. After that, no player may choose a "big six" team in successive weeks. If all remaining contestants are eliminated in a given week, a winner will be chosen by the following criteria:
1. draws beat losses
2. away goals
3. home goals
4. If this formula fails to break the tie, the round will be declared a draw
Players may choose a particular team only once per round of the competition. I will post a list of all remaining players for each round and the teams which they may no longer select. Once a winner is declared for a given round, a new round will be opened up and all players will be welcomed back in. The player who wins the most rounds during the course of the year will be declared the champion.
Hopefully this rule change will add a little more excitement to the competition and will hold everyone's interest a little better. In any event, this rule change is not written in stone, so if you have a better idea I'm willing to listen.
Can't wait for this season to start.

I like it...
I was one who rarely picked a rich 6 club... hence my low score last year..

Great idea, John
I briefly mentioned adopting this system last season for the very reasons you have put forward.

I like the change and think it can work. My only reservation is the extra burden it places on you John in figuring out who has picked what, particularly with the rule change being enforced. Hope it's not too much extra work.

Re: Last Man Standing 2022 - 2023
I wouldn't have suggested it if I thought it was going to be onerous.
This contest is not nearly as difficult to administer as the Pick Six or MOTM calculations.

Re: Last Man Standing 2022 - 2023
The only concern I have is that everyone still standing in the second week of any round will pick a top six side, but I'm willing to give this a try for the first round or two. We can tweak the rules if it doesn't work as we hope it will.
Re: Last Man Standing 2022 - 2023
You could go the first two rounds without a top six pick if you are concerned, John.John in Louisiana wrote: ↑Thu Jul 21, 2022 6:44 pm The only concern I have is that everyone still standing in the second week of any round will pick a top six side, but I'm willing to give this a try for the first round or two. I like your idea of not selecting top six clubs in consecutive weeks

Re: Last Man Standing 2022 - 2023
Just to clarify, is it the big six clubs or the top 6 in the league each round?
Stop worryin' about what people say, when it ain't gonna stop them anyway.

The big 6 have to lake each other as well.
