My wife (Michèle) in Sheffield yesterday. Taken near Peddlars Market at a tattoo convention we went to. We're on the way back to the car to drive to some burger place at Triple Point Brewery (2nd pic) before we go back to the tattoo thingy. My best pal this gal (been together 15 year: since she was 20)...

The wife takes them into school, although I don’t think they’re allowed to use them for the traditional conker fights we would have enjoyed as kids, Foxy

🤣 Soaked in vinegar and roasted slowly in the oven, had to remember to bore the hole for the string 1st though.

These two flew in to the patio window with a right thump whilst i was taking the flooring up ,best i could do was take a photo through the glass .
Is it a sparrow hawk?
It flew off with the Pidgeon when i went outside to get a better picture.

I have a regular that sits quietly in my hawthorn hedge. Patiently waiting for a sparrow to pop in. My wife wants to shoo it away but I have to tell her it’s just nature.

They ambush the birds by flying up & over fences at high speed.
Seen one plucking a pigeon alive. Grim but that’s nature. They eat everything bar claws & beak.

I was impressed when it flew off with the Pidgeon the hawk was not much bigger than its prey.

I’ve watched one trying to kill a massive pigeon and it gave up in the end. Jumped up & down on it for 20 minutes. It was a pigeon version of McKennie.

If you’re interested do read a book called “H is for Hawk” by Helen MacDonald. It’s about owning & training a hawk to hunt. Fascinating book. It actually accidentally attacks her  Available for a few quid on used book sites.
Some great observations of the stupidity of pheasant rearing. Killing raptors basically because they see the young birds as an easy meal.

I was in my local hire place and something flew at speed in to the giant front windows of the building.
I walked out expecting to see a dead bird and it was a very dazed juvenile sparrowhawk. From the tree line 200 metres away you could clearly hear the adult calling it. Think it was probably on a practice flight.
I held it for a bit, it actually shook its head as if to say “that really hurt” then flew off back towards the adult.
Was a lovely sight.
