Egan Bernal - cyclist

Post by Orange Box »

Relatively better news for the current and at only 22, the youngest winner of the Tour de France for a century, who crashed into a bus at speed whilst out time-trial training a few days ago, sustaining life-threatening injuries. After multiple surgeries to chest and spine his spinal cord is now considered stabilised and the paralysis threat is probably over. He however remains in ICU, with over 20 fractures listed and still to be treated. He is conscious and states happy just to be alive.
Touted to be one of the greats of cycling, just walking again is going to be a major achievement.
Best wishes to him, and a real warning out there to all cyclists to be careful when out on the roads.

PS please don't turn this topic into a driver/cyclist hate-fest out of respect for a very young athlete fighting life changing injuries. Thank you.

Yeah I saw this on Sky Sports News the other day OB.
Extremely unlikely he will ever be able to compete on a bike again. Very sad.
He has a very long recovery road ahead of him.

Awful news, didn’t know until reading this thread.
Hope he recovers to some kind of normal life.

Not good, it never is when it's car/van/bus v's cyclist

I had a van driver try 3 times to knock me off recently, swerving into my path and braking hard, I carry front and rear cameras, so was caught on camera and sent to the plod, they did nothing, but you can clearly see his brakes lights on in this screenshot, going to court to sort it out

Good luck to Egan and wishing him all the best with his recovery.

Busses do sometimes make silly maneuvers and here in Britain they are protected by CCTV. I often wonder if the driver that pulled out in front of me ever drove on that route again after reporting him. Bad weather was no excuse I had a blinding light to make sure drivers saw me approaching.

I've used green transport and cycled almost everywhere for 20+ years. Most drivers are ok, but there are those who daydream, use their smartphones or search through glove compartments whilst driving.

I had two near misses on my way home from work on new years eve. First I was on the pavement pushing the bike and an idiot had its wheels in the curb at +30 mph missing me by 6 inches. 25 mins later a taxi did a u-turn on a main road missing my front wheel by just a few inches. He apologised after advising him just how close he came to injuring me through careless driving and I further advised him to drive more carefully in future.

Drivers need to remember that bones are no match for steel and a cyclists life is entirely in their hands.

I would love to find one of these motorists that intensionally skim me on the bike, and skim them in my van, I bet they wouldn't like it

Good luck to the driver, the cameras don't lie, but he clearly does

No they wouldn't like it done to them.

Do drivers feel so secure and warm in their seats that they just don't care to realise how much distress their actions cause to those on two wheels. Tiredness must be a factor for inconsiderant driving, but could it be that cyclists don't pay road tax therefore shouldn't be on the road? I'd gladly contribute to a road tax if it improved road safety for cyclists.

Vehicle tax then. You know the little round sticker for a windscreen that drivers buy to have a vehicle on the road. I'm under the impression that the fee helps to maintain the cost of repairs to road surfaces.

Maybe cyclists should also pay for the upkeep of the cycle lanes, ie the removal of smashed glass and debris.

For goodness sake. Please refer to OB's original post. A young man is fighting for his life....OB SPECIFICALLY asked out of respect for the young man for no negativity between drivers and cyclists on his post. Let's respect that...please
