The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wednesday 1st July) - Leeds thwarted by lowly Luton

Post by Ellandback1 »

Good Morning. It's Wednesday 1st July, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Leeds thwarted by lowly Luton

Leeds once again, with be rueing their missed opportunities between the sticks having been held to a 1-1 draw against Luton Town at Elland Road last night. A combination of edged misses, sturdy framework and goal keeping beyond the keepers means (which we have come to expect from most teams playing Leeds this season) frustrated the Whites in front of goal.

Did the fact that Bielsa kept the same starting line up (for the 4,768 time in a row) help Nathan Jones with his tactics? Surely, if you know what your opposition are going to do up front, you can put a plan in place! Why do Leeds not learn by their mistakes? This was the mirror image of the Cardiff game!

Bielsa's post match reaction

A thoroughly depressed Marcelo Bielsa tries to explain to the the press why his players can not hit a barn door from 18 yards.

Injury update

Leeds will be without Tuesdays nights goal scorer for their visit to Blackburn. Stuart Dallas has a slight hamstring pull, and will be rested until after the weekend. Cooper and Hernandez are also both carrying knocks. Their situation will be monitored! Bielsa said (re Dallas)...

He feels something in the lower back/glutes, but don’t think he’s going to play in the next match. Liam Cooper, it’s a kick, very painful in the side, but don’t think it’s a heavy injury.

Discussing whether Hernandez could get 90 minutes on Saturday, Bielsa said...

We are going to analyse this. He played less than the last match today. See how he feels from now to Saturday. After that we are going to decide.

How did LUTV hold up to record viewers?

Is everyone happy with the quality of LUTV? Put aside your loyalties to former club favorites, but should Beckford get anywhere near a commentary box? What do Emma Louise Jones and Ben Parker add to the party? What about the stream itself, is it good enough?

What about the recording / editing. Several times we missed opportunities when replays were being shown! Should we expect more considering our owner is a Sports Media Tycoon?

I don't think you can say Luton (or other teams previously) got their tactics right considering we created 23 chances of which 9 were on target. If we take our chances at an average rate we win the game comfortably - same as has been the case in the majority of matches this season that we have drawn or lost. When discussing the game prior to the match the 2 options for Luton were to come and attack us or to sit back and rely on Leeds's inefficiency. Sadly they relied on Leeds's inefficiency and like many before got a reward despite being outplayed.

Despite the poor result we have to take the positives and move on. The main positives are that we at least got something after going behind and are a point closer to promotion. Since lockdown we have gone from 7 points clear of third with 9 to play to 6 points clear with 6 to play so it is not far off maintaining the gap - okay Brentford are in form but form can quickly change. The point also means we will stay ahead of WBA even if they win their game in hand so it keeps the pressure on them too as they are closer to third than we are.

The bamford and costa misses were diabolical, proper school boy stuff. both absolutely peachy crosses with no end product.

We are going to face teams sitting back with the same packed defences for the next 6 games, we have to learn quickly how to be more clinical in front of goal, and I’m not just getting at Bamford here, Costa is just as profligate - 1 goal from 23 attempts, 9 on target is just not good enough. And why do opposition goalkeepers always play out of their skin when playing us. And not one of 15 corners caused any problems at all for Luton grrrrr

their keeper made some good saves last night, but most of them were straight at him. Costa/harrison/bamford don't seem to be able to place their shots where the keeper isn't

It's too late in the day for players to start putting away their chances ....they simply are not natural finishers and the club do not possess one because they have refused to buy one yet they will waste millions on duff loan players . The club are wholly to blame for the piss poor recruitment and if they really believe that they can continue with this amateur policy in the PL (if we get there) they are very mistaken. We have what we have and they may well get us up but for Christ sake get rid at the end of this season and invest in forwards who can create their own goals and finish off what others provide for them.

Morning Folks

According to the square ball Bamford and Costa said the lights got in their eyes.

Re Lutons tactics, they did get them right. They rotated their squad and omitted four players who were part of the side who won away to Swansea. Plus they had a late in the day injury to contend with. Horses for courses instead of our square pegs in round holes policy.

Five at the back meant we are never able to overload them. Even when we doubled up on the wingers. Plus first minute off the second half, once Jones saw we had went three at the back with Ayling in the three he brought on a pacy forward who scored within four minutes.
They did well considering they have poor players, are a newly promoted and are bottom of the league.

Despite the stats did we ever look like making a breakthrough?

Bamford isn't a lone striker. Phillips isn't a free ball specialist and Pablo cant be the only answer.

I don’t buy this floodlights got in the eyes of Bamford and Costa as it’s the same lights we’ve had for years, the only possible excuse is the groundsman’s been up changing a bulb and moved them.

Bamford got loads of stick for blocking a goal bound effort at Cardiff but no mention of Roberts blocking Dallas’s certain goal last night when the game was poised at 1-1.

6 to go and 6 clear of 3rd, I’d rather be where we are than Brentford and WBA

I have sympathy with Bamford and Costa if it was down to the floodlights. I know from playing experience that floodlights can totally blind you in regards to seeing the ball if the ball is in direct line with one - you can be a couple of yards to the side and it won't be a problem. Both crosses were delivered from roughly the same spot to the same spot in the box. Not a lot you can really do as floodlights have to be somewhere, only thing I could suggest would be more bulbs at a lower output. Certainly the way they both completely seemed to lose sight of it would lead me to believe them rather than if they simply did bad headers.

It’s said that Bielsa took an average mid-table squad and moulded them into contenders.
When they are at their best they are match winners but nobody can keep up the required intensity over a whole season.
Marcelo doesn’t trust his fringe players enough to rotate, we don’t have anyone on the field to score or create the spark so we are caught in a loop.
There Is Only One United.
