Sublime.....album of the year
22/07/15 - posted up on my playlist
Benjamin Clementine - At Least For Now - a unique refreshing beautiful stunning soulful album - ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Bill Fay & Max Richter are up there with the best albums of 2015 but there was never any doubt in my mind as Clementine came up with something different compared to the rest. Who'd have thought a soulful album would be the album of the year on MOT

For me at the moment Beirut and Bill Fay are the top 2 candidates... though as an aside.... If I take up hypnotherapy as a profession again..... Max will be handy...

Re: Album Of The 2015 - RESULT
MOT's ALBUM OF THE YEAR
At Least For Now - Benjamin Clementine
The astonishing range of Benjamin's voice, from deeply soulful to soaring wonder is mesmerising. His keyboard work is simply beautiful (echoes of Glass or Richter perhaps?) & hypnotic, driving the song ominously along; yet at others, gentle & crystalline. The music embraces a richly melodic sound-world, and is also lyrically strong. Deeply-felt, committed performances ensures this is an album to touch both heart & soul. A stunning piece of work

I think that was fairly predictable. Good album but wouldn't be in my top 10 if I'm honest.

Nick & I are big soul fans, was surprised Genghers voted for Clementine although he admired the album so much so he went to one of BC's concerts
I really thought the Rock nominations were average at best
Some great singer/songwriter albums from Billl Fay, Natalie Prass & the magnificent Julia Holter album that everyone seems to have ignored, even my Mrs is enjoying this gorgeous piece of work. Won Mojo's album of the year & was in other top fives in the media.
Max Ritcher & Kemasi Washington are also rightly up there as the best albums of the year imo
Re: Album Of The 2015 - RESULT
Oh aye, I like BC, don't get me wrong. When I first saw him on Jools Holland (2, maybe even 3 years ago?) I thought it was one of the best performances I'd seen on there for years. I remember thinking "blimey, this bloke is exceptional. He really has that something". Reminded me of a young, male Nina Simone. I was just a bit disappointed in the album compared to how much I thought I was going to like it but that's just me. I think it's a good album, I really do, just not as good as I hoped it would be. As you say though, it's all down to personal taste. Clearly it has a lot of admirers and, as a singer-songwriter, he has a uniqueness that the vast majority don't have. He also seems like a really nice fella.1964white wrote:

I'll be honest, I can't get past how great the Kamasi album is. It shows an ambition and a breadth of style and influence I haven't heard from anyone in a long time. It's a very difficult album to sit and listen to all the way through if you're not really, really into jazz though. Almost 3 hours long with a lot of cutting loose on the tenor sax. Not to everyone's taste.
I agree about the rock output from last year though. 2015 really wasn't a vintage year for great rock albums. I struggled to think of 2 that I really loved and the fact that my favourite was probably the Killing Joke one says a lot about (in my opinion) the dearth of decent stuff that was released.
Re: Album Of The 2015 - RESULT
One sadly missed legend has already shown the rock artists of 2015 how to make a great album. Just waiting to hear the new Suede album in full, hopefully that one has also kicked off 2016 with a bangDurly wrote:
