Burnley, New Cure for Insomnia.
Question - If/when we get promoted could our fans stomach a season of Burnley style football if it avoided the dreaded Yo Yo Effect. Jammy mentioned on the match thread that George Graham got us a mid-table finish by playing similar football, who would accept mind numbing football if it secured a foothold in the Promised Land ???

Definitely, if that is what it takes to become established.
The gulf between the Pl and the rest widens by the season and to build a firm foundation it takes time and patience.
That said I dont think that approach guarantees anything.
Also the fare that Leeds dish up is pretty mind numbing at times, the only added element is the anxiety we feel as it feels like 3 points are a must every week

Tough question, Cussie.
I wouldn't look forward to matches if that was our approach.
I still believe Leeds & Burnley would come a cropper playing that style of football in the Premier League.

As Ian says, the gulf between the PL and the Championship widens year on year, there has to be a pragmatic approach otherwise we'd be straight back down again. This is where a manager earns their corn, a side needs to be hard to beat but also capable of taking what scant chances might come along in a game. Recruitment and a willingness to adapt the style of play based on opponents will be key, as will patience from fans and a realisation that we may not be entertained for a few seasons until we become established.

Having a solid defensive shape with pacy forwards to counter attack with is the best we could hope for initially. Trying to dominate, or have your fair share of possession whilst playing out from the back is a recipe for relegation for teams promoted to the PL. Of course Marcelo Bielsa and Chris Wilder proved you could take on the top teams in a different way but their methods only worked for short period of time before results declined.
Brentford are a good example of how they tweaked their style after promotion by playing a more pragmatic style to cut out the goals conceded by playing around with the ball in their own defensive third. They then hit longer balls to Ivan Tony etc and picked up enough points to survive.

Think Villa, Brentford, Fulham and Brighton. They went up and stayed up. Brighton and Brentford are small clubs with small stadiums, which defies the logic that you have to be big to stay up. Attendence wise Leeds have more fans watching games than a few clubs in the premiership.
If only your success were determined by the fanaticism of your fans base. and not the style of play on the field.

The same with Leicester - they relied on a decent defence and whacked long balls up for Vardy who could outpace most defenders.Jammy 07 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 9:30 am Having a solid defensive shape with pacy forwards to counter attack with is the best we could hope for initially. I do think we are looking stronger as a team, and at times it felt like our quick breaks could have got a winner as with James’s shot. We were definitely looking for a draw and being more cautious though but there were still times when Burnley’s quick breaks caused us problems. At the moment I’m not confident we’d stay up but as under Graham, it wasn’t pretty but it was effective. Getting established will be the key but I’m not sure how much patience some of our fans would have nowadays.Irish Ian wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 8:31 am Definitely, if that is what it takes to become established.

Bournemouth are a even smaller club & look at the way they are playing scintillating football offensively & defensively. The Cherries are a joy to watch.Sean_Nile wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 9:42 am Think Villa, Brentford, Fulham and Brighton. They went up and stayed up. Ally McCoist agrees with you Leon.
The reality is that it might take a few years of yo-yoing for Leeds or anyone else to bridge the gap now, incrementally improving the quality in the squad over time till finally able to compete.
The ubiquitous use of unexplainable is inexplicable.

The trouble is that it takes a lot of 0-0 draws to get to anywhere near enough points to be safe. If you play attacking football then probably 10 wins gives you a chance of avoiding relegation. If Burnley go up and carried on the way they play then they will score even less and also be more likely to concede.CUSSIE01 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 8:09 am Question - If/when we get promoted could our fans stomach a season of Burnley style football if it avoided the dreaded Yo Yo Effect. To succeed with a George Graham style you really do need a striker who is prolific. Our good season under Graham involved Hasselbaink notching aroun 20 goals. Similar with his Arsenal teams with Alan Smith and then Ian Wright. Keep the opposition out at one end and knowing that one chance at the other end might be enough.
I love leeds united, may I never admit to it.

Football fans aren’t known for their patience Heidi but hopefully they can see the long game. We’re all spoiled with winning games & scoring plenty of goals over the past 2 seasons but that’s not going to happen in the Premiership so fasten your seatbelts it’s gonna be a bumpy ride.Lufcheidi wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 10:00 am I do think we are looking stronger as a team, and at times it felt like our quick breaks could have got a winner as with James’s shot. I'm generally hyped up after a match, and struggle to sleep immediately.

Sadly I don't think many of ours do as they want instant success. To think I wanted to build that success under Bielsa and it was destroyed within months.CUSSIE01 wrote: ↑Tue Jan 28, 2025 6:17 pm Football fans aren’t known for their patience Heidi but hopefully they can see the long game.
