I watched it back and it didn't look excessive at all.
How many of the stewards have ridden professionally?
For me its a terrible rule. Badly thought out. The jockey probably miscounted but we simply have no idea what it’s like to ride in a race.

None, I suspect.

No I cant agree with that Cat.
Total nonsense tbh.
The modern whip is almost completely unable to “hurt” a horse.
The Jockey Club believe that with this rule they are not only protecting the horse but also the image of racing.
But look at the ban handed out to Gordon Elliot for laughing whilst sitting on a dead horse.
It’s a joke compared to taking 100k plus off the connections of Alphonse.
Been following and attending racing for nearly 45 years and this is nothing compared to some things I’ve seen. The rule is simply not fit for purpose.
Of course anyone watching has the option to not watch and in comparison to farm animals destined for the table racing loves its horses and generally treats them like gods.
Like I said most grandstand jockeys simply have no idea what they’re talking about.

Taking today's honours is, Foxy , who landed a massive 33/1 winner in the Cesarewitch (although given that the jockey beat the poor animal to within an inch of its life (and is therefore likely to be disqualified) with his excessive use of the whip ....morally I should be giving the win to Mrs64's pick !!)

It cracks me up.
I’ve had people tell me racing is cruel and the very same people eat cheap meat & chicken from Aldi, Tesco & Asda. Of course those animals are treated well aren’t they.
I actually had a conversation with a jockey who rode professionally and he said they’d go nowhere near a two year old without a whip. Its a steering aid.
Would you want to drive a car without a steering wheel?

Dont forget they effectively have 9 as its 4 over the allowable (6). So 9 would get him a ban but not the horse.
He’s miscounted. Simple as that. But the last one barely connects. Extremely harsh imo.

I don't think he used the whip aggressively.

I'll feel sad for the connections if they lose the race.

I remember how disappointed I was, when having a £1 ew stake on Jenny Pitman's Esha Ness @ 33/1, who subsequently lost the voided race.

Not at all. Rode a perfectly timed race. Gave the horse time in between to respond to the whip.
I’ve no idea why they don’t trial some no whip races.
Say a race with experienced handicappers every Saturday.

He did. The last one is very half hearted.
The JC haven’t got a clue. Have they even consulted the jockeys. So basically you could batter a horse 6 times in the last furlong and thats ok. No logic.
I think the arm can only be raised a certain height so really it’s more of a flick with a heavily adapted whip.
I seem to remember “hands & heels” races for apprentices. Teach them to ride without a whip.
Should be more of those for all jockeys.
