European/World Football

Post by 1964white »

Italy equalled the international record of 36 unbeaten games but were held to a draw in Switzerland that keeps World Cup qualifying Group C in the balance.

The European champions were the better side but also wasteful, with Jorginho seeing a second-half penalty saved.

Roberto Mancini's side top the group with 10 points, four points ahead of the second-placed Swiss but having played two matches more.

Jean-Pierre Adams: Former France international dies after 39 years in coma.

Adams was admitted to hospital for knee surgery in March 1982 but never regained consciousness after an error with his supply of anaesthetic.

Born in Senegal, the defender made more than 140 appearances for Nice and also played for Paris St-Germain and won 22 caps for France.

RIP

Well done Lukaku.
Always baffled me as to why England strikers struggle to score more than say 50 goals within say 70 caps, charlton had a decent record as did greaves but injury curtailed that.
Crouch had a good record per games, but rooney , well they kept giving him caps to break the record, bit like beckham, keep him passed his sell by date to beat the record caps, media darlings.
Lineker should have done it and shearer didnt get as many to do it, hopefully Kane will smash it. If not Kane then Bamford.

England are up to third in Fifa's men's world rankings, equalling their highest ever position.

Following their defeat by Italy in the Euro 2020 final in July, England beat Hungary and Andorra 4-0 in World Cup qualifying earlier this month before drawing with Poland.

Gareth Southgate's men move above world champions France, who drop to fourth after two draws and a win.

The last time England were ranked third was in September 2012.

Hungary have been ordered to play two matches behind closed doors by Fifa following the racism English players experienced at the World Cup qualifier in Budapest on 2 September.

However, the second ground closure is suspended for two years.

The Hungarian Football Federation has also been fined £158,400 (200,000 Swiss Francs).

"Fifa takes a clear zero tolerance stance against such abhorrent behaviour in football," read Fifa's statement.
