Match Thread Leeds Utd V Anfield Red Sox Match Thread - Jack Harrison and Pascal Struijk come into the side

Post by Ellandback1 »

Monday 19th April 20:00 | Elland Road

Leeds will be without the services of Brazilian wizard Raphinha when Anfield Red Sox are the visitors to Elland Road on Monday evening. The game now having added spice with crowds congregating outside the stadium to protest the Liverpool clubs involvement in the European Super League.

For Leeds winger Raphinha is expected to be sidelined for up til a month following being chopped down in mid flight by Fernandinho at the weekend. He joins record signing Rodrigo on the treatment table with a similar thigh injury. Leeds skipper Liam Cooper serves the first of a three game ban after getting sent off at the weekend. Bielsa has the luxury of picking two from Struijk, Llorente and Koch but will stick with the pairind of Llorente and Struijk who started the second half against City. Luke Ayling will take the Captains armband. Jack Harrison will return to the starting line up. The 24 year old was unable to play against his parent club at the weekend. osta is expected to fill in on the right wing as Raphinha's replacement. Long term absentee Adam Forshaw recently returned to action playing in a friendly against York City and in the U23 game against Aston Villa on Friday night. He will be further put through his paces with the U23's before being unleashed into the first team, though he did look sharp.

Following their exit from Europe at the hands of Real Madrid; Jurgen Klopp's men will want to make a mission statement. The current Champions are in sixth place, eleven points behind second place Manchester United, with seven games left. They will have to fight tooth and nail if they want Champions League football next season, though that may not be such as an incentive anymore as they have been announced as one of the 12 teams set to form a breakaway European Super League. Manager Jurgen Klopp is boosted by the news that he has no new injury concerns to contend with but Joe Gomez, Jordan Henderson, Joel Matip and Virgil van Dijk remain on the sidelines.

Last time out, Leeds first game back in the top flight, was a frantic 4-3 victory to Liverpool, though Leeds were unlucky not to come away with at least a point. Without Salah it would have been a different story for the Anfield side, he was outstanding but Pascal Struijk and Luke Ayling kept Mané and Firmino quiet for most of the game. Leeds scored the better goals in that encounter, Liverpool were pushed hard all game and restricted to set-pieces whilst Harrison and Klich’s efforts will be worthy contenders for goal of the season. Liverpool may have taken the points but Leeds will came away with the plaudits.

Leeds have won just one of their last 11 home games against Liverpool in all competitions. Liverpool are one short of becoming the first club to record 50 top-flight victories against Leeds. Leeds have kept only one clean sheet in their last 21 competitive matches versus Liverpool. Following their 2-1 win at Manchester City last week, Leeds could become just the second side in Premier League history to beat the league leaders and the reigning champions in consecutive matches, after Everton beat Chelsea and Manchester United in February 2010. Leeds are aiming to win four top-flight games in a row within the same season for the first time since April 2001. No side has scored more Premier League goals from outside the box than the 12 Leeds have this season.

Leeds Starting XI
Meslier, Ayling, Struijk, Llorente, Alioski, Phillips, Dallas, Harrison, Roberts, Costa, Bamford

Subs: Casilla, Berardi, Davis, Koch, Shackleton, Klich, Poveda, Hernandez, Gelhardt

The game is at ER.
Gutted that Rapha looks like he is going to miss out. Would have loved to see him up against Robertson.

My team

Meslier
Ayling
Llorente
Koch
Alioski
Phillips
Dallas
Klich
Costa
Harrison
Bamford

Bielsa's team will see Struijk for Koch which I'm fine with but for me the quicker we get Koch left side compatible the better. Then Roberts for Klich as he's been in top form since starting

If we can beat Citeh with 10 men we can beat anybody... Liverpool can now focus on the top 4 places in the PL when they visit Elland Rd on Monday. If Raph has been confirmed out? then its a big kick in the teeth. You have one committed ball winning challenge that gets punished for the possibility of injury and one blatant foul that has resulted in injury.

More rest time for the team and i am confident the lads will give another good account of themselves.

Losing Raph would be a massive blow, he is clearly our best attacking player.

However, if the VAR laws were the same at the start of the season as they are now Liverpool wouldn't have beat us.

And that was a Leeds side with no Raphinha, no Llorente and Liverpool side with everyone fit, Van Dijk, Henderson, Mane, Salah etc.

Liverpool were full strength and still needed VAR to beat us.

The lads will be feeling 10ft tall after recent results, drawing with Chelsea and beating Man City with 10 men.

Liverpool are still a good side but so are we and we will he feeling confident. Pressure is all on Liverpool, Champions League gone, title gone, top 4 status looking precarious.

Pressure can do funny things, nothing to fear here.

And frankly after the desperate power grab Liverpool and Manure tried to orchestrate earlier this year and now with the bent powers that be trying to ensure that clubs like Liverpool get all the money that comes with European football regardless of their league performance in the future, i would take great satisfaction if we managed to beat Liverpool this season and helped to deny them Champions League next season.

So we lose Coops due to suspension because he might have injured Jesus but didn’t. And we lose Ralph because he actually was injured by a far more cynical tackle that didn’t warrant a suspension.

Yes, gutted that Raph looks to be out. So much wrong in that Fernandinho didn't see red for that. I don't fully blame Marriner as much as I blame VAR for not looking at it or referring it for Marriner to review on the VAR screen, especially the shenanigans that went on with Cooper's yellow being changed. As it happens, I have some friends who are Liverpool fans who've complained about Fernandinho's snidey tactics for a a few seasons now, and that he rarely gets punished for it.

Still four days for Raphinha to recover so you never know he may start.

Massive blow if he misses the game, Liverpool defenders will be relieved but we can still hurt their shaky defence.

This is one of those games I'd like to see Rapha and Harrison/Costa swapping wings a couple of times during the game as TTA and Robertson wouldn't know their ar5e from their elbows if that were to happen.

(Mind, We've got Ayling and Alioski up against Salah/Mane/Jota  )

I wish our fans were at the game tomorrow night so we could vent our feelings towards a possible breakaway league by continuously booing Liverpool, we could carry out similar actions in the following match v Manure but the animosity is always pretty hostile generally. :x

I mentioned it elsewhere, but it would be soooo satisfying if we could beat them tomorrow. It would show what can happen when a traditional club rises from the ashes to challenge the “big boys” once again, on behalf of all the decent clubs that are struggling and scraping to get back to the PL and throw themselves into such a test.

If Liverpool feel they are now above such historical tests/competition then let them off, but out of the PL with them and the meritocracy of the league system that built them.

This is one game I really would love to see us win, now especially.
