The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Tuesday 19th May) Championship season to return 20th June?

Post by Ellandback1 » Tue May 19, 2020 7:53 am

Good Morning. It's Tuesday 19th May, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road...

Championship football to return 20th June

The EFL are pushing forward with plans for the 2019/20 Championship season to recommence. It has been over ten weeks since Leeds beat Huddersfield Town at Elland Road due to the coronavirus epidemic, but finally the EFL are putting plans in place to test to test all players in the Championship this week, and a return to training next Monday.

Clubs have put forward a TV schedule for Tuesday and Wednesday games to kick-off at 6pm and 8pm. Weekend fixtures will go from early afternoon through to the evening with start times at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. Although perhaps a little premature, the EFL are suggesting the 20th June to get games underway!

Al-Khelaifi named as the most influential person in football

Qatar Sports Investments Chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been named as the most influential person in football topping a list of 50 of the Worlds most high profile Soccer figures, drawn up by the Ballon d’Or organizers. While takeover talks at Elland Road have gone quiet over recent times with football suspended due to the health crisis, the PSG chief is hopeful that the £120 million deal will be finalized before the beginning of next season. This makes sense, a lot rides on whether Leeds will be in the Premier League next season, and until the season is concluded, there is little point discussing the finer parts of a takeover bid.

Whelan slams Championship five

Further to the Daily Mails report that three of the five Championship Clubs wanting the abandon the 2019/20 season are located in Yorkshire; ex Leeds striker Noel Whelan has been speaking to journalists to have his say. Unsurprisingly, four of the division’s relegation-threatened sides are Yorkshire based. Little love has been lost between the Yorkshire clubs over the years with many people speculating that the antagonist four would lose little sleep by scuppering the Whites promotion chances. Whelan was asked if vested interests were behind the sides objections to the season restarting:

Chairmen, people affiliated with clubs, they have got their own intentions. Everyone has a vested interest in their own clubs but it is up to the majority. It is going to be about outweighing the ones that are grumbling. They are only grumbling for their own interests.

They should be dealing with their own clubs. If Huddersfield are down there battling, it is because they have not been good enough. Leeds are up there because they have been consistent throughout the season. Very rarely have Leeds been outside the top-two. It shows how strong they have been. Let them grumble, they are a minority.

The Mail are reporting that Leeds had already purchased their own coronavirus testing machine from Randox Toxicology at the cost of £100,000.

It can’t be used for official results, but could be used for the families of players and non-footballing staff.

What? Making us play out the season?

I bet it wouldn't have happened if ending the season early didn't mean that we'd be automatically promoted.

It's all part of an anti-Leeds plot.
We're going up like there is no gravity!

Seems like at long last people are seeing a bit of common sense. Steve Bruce saying it will be safer to play football than to go supermarket shopping and Gary Neville saying the players should be quarantined together for the few weeks in a similar manner to if they were at a world cup.

Interesting to see that Troy Deeney, Watford player, has said he won't be returning to training. Whilst I can understand his concerns as he has a few month old baby with breathing difficulties I really do think that he shouldn't be paid his full wages if he isn't going to play - after all that is what he is being paid for. I doubt a worker who refuses to go back to work in a minimum wage job, for similar reasons, would still get their full wages paid. He is in the lucky position where he doesn't have to work to pay the bills etc. Equally he could return to training but afford to stay away from his family for the few weeks. I wonder if his team wasn't 4th bottom and wouldn't benefit from football not returning that he would adopt the same stance.

Interesting that none of the players from teams chasing titles or promotions seem to share the same concerns.

How many points can you see?

Cardiff (A) If we played like we did against them for the opening 50-60 minutes then we should win comfortably. Concern is obviously their set plays and long balls but for the majority of the season we have been able to deal with that side of things.

Fulham (H) Well we didn't play great against them but were still the equal of them if not better. We should be good enough to beat them comfortably but keeping Mitrovic quiet could be key.

Luton (H) We didn't play great at their place but scraped the win. If we play anywhere near our best we should be much too good for them.

Blackburn (A) I see this as potentially being the trickiest game of the lot. They nullified us a lot of the time at ER and are a good strong team.

Stoke (H) A very fragile team but it is key to not underestimate them and be at our best. Similar to the Luton match if we play anywhere near our best we should win comfortably (not that we win comfortably that often so probably more likely we batter them all game, go a goal down and win with 2 injury time goals, one being an own goal).

Swansea (A) Swansea were on a high when they played us but even then we were the better team but wasted our chances. Swansea got lucky with a scrappy goal. We should set the record straight.

Barnsley (H) Barnsley played well against us matching fire with fire rather than simply being defensive. However their manager is gone and they may well simply try to frustrate us. Could be a long afternoon of us playing against a parked bus.

Derby (A) Well we absolutely battered them with a supreme display. The match turned when we missed the penalty for 2-0. Score that and we probably would have won 4-0 or 5-0. That miss combined with the fact they had been battered mercilessly but were still only 1-0 down left Derby with the hope that they could once again get something against us that they didn't deserve - and of course they did. As such I feel our players will still be out to set the record from last season straight and give them an absolute pasting. 5-0 Leeds, Rooney sent off and a title winning party that no one can attend unless they stand 2 metres away from everyone else.

Charlton (H) Hopefully this will be similar to the Norwich win in 92 whereby the result didn't even matter as we were champions already. Charlton probably deserved their win when they beat us earlier in the season but they were flying high them and we played poorly. We should have enough in the tank to beat them comfortably and hopefully we do but Charlton stay up as I think Lee Bowyer has done an excellent job there and I still feel he was hard done by over the way he was portrayed in the media during the trial etc. Even now Bowyer is viewed by many as simply a thug, despite him being found innocent of all charges, whereas Woodgate who was found guilty of affray never seems to get referenced to it. Bowyer was fantastic for us that season despite the off field distractions and never really seemed to get the send off from the fans he deserved.

Well if you're right clearly the ER crowd has zero effect on our players ...

In theory, the lack of a crowd could be good:
1 Home games shouldn’t have that negative feeling if not playing well but we shouldn’t need the crowd behind us as we play like robots 😉

2 Away games won’t have the other teams up for it as much, but even if they are, it might not effect us as we play like robots 😁

3 🤞🤞🤞 Finger’s crossed

I think we are quite capable of losing any of the matches if we play like we have done several times and failed to capitalise on the numerous chances we create. Equally though play as well as we can and convert our chances at a reasonable rate and we are capable of winning each and every match.

6 people out of the 700+ players and staff tested for the Premier League restart have tested positive. 1 has been named as Burnley assistant boss Ian Woan. So a maximum of 5 players. Germany had 10 from around double the testing (presumably their 2nd division were tested at the same time). So it looks like a similar ratio.
