Got his comupannce?yes he committed horrible acts, but there were horrible acts on both sides, sadly a war destroyed our country for many years, such horrible times, thankfully McGuinness was able to be a major player in bringing peace to Ireland.

I'm glad Ireland is now in peace after years of horrible atrocities, innocent people suffered not only in Ireland but in England too. Sadly for me I find it difficult in my heart to show any compassion towards murderers/terrorists or anyone who commits horrendous crimes of any nature in any walk of life !

I cannot condone what he done. But, the Britain government and army along with loyalists did equally bad things. It's just a shame it took so long to find peace. Let's hope those days never return.
And that Ireland will soon be, rightfully, united again.

I cringed when I read this. there are 2 sides to every story and with this being such a political nightmare I can only see falling out on the subject.

I agree with dezzy, this forum is no place for discourse on something as emotive as Irish politics. And that's coming from an Irishman who lived through the Troubles

Well said lads, and it's a dig at nobody. There was so much wrong and evil that went on from both sides spanning such a long time, that's impossible to discuss. We have peace now, which line it or not, he helped achieve, his past shouldn't be ignored either.

I must admit, when I saw this thread first thing this morning, I also thought " oh dear ". It's just way too emotive a subject to discuss on a forum such as this in my opinion.

People have varying opinions about the man & yes he did some great work in his later life to help create peace in what is a lovely country the Emerald Isle.
Maybe my initial post was lacking in humanity, hey even our Queen found forgiveness shaking hands with MM on one of her visits to Northern Ireland, must have been difficult for her bearing in mind the tragic death of Lord Mountbatten

The news that Martin McGuinness has passed away will mean different things to different people, as it did with the passing of Ian Paisley.
I personally think these two quotes help illustrate how much we have matured and grown as a society.
Here is Martin McGuinness' reaction to Ian Paisleys death

Here is Ian Paisleys sons reactions to Martins' death

To see these two huge figures finally come together and be extremely respectful to one another at the end of their lives while still having their political differences is truly inspiring.

Not often I agree with a tory, but I think John Major summed it up when he said that when MM died, he had a balance showing in both the credit and debit column's in his life ledger.

Hugely newsworthy story, but a generally harmonious forum like this doesn't need the grief a topic like this can generate. Let's move on, everyone
