Pope to Leeds was never ever going to happen.

(i) Leeds will never make a sub keeper one of their highest paid players
(ii) A keeper looking to the World Cup will never be warming a bench at a club with ambitions to get into mid table

Lets go with no back-up keeper, DM, AM & striker as we did last season & see where it takes us 🙄

Only our board & certain Leeds fans on here would refuse to sign players better than what we already ard have at the club.

He cost only £10m ffs.

We need serious competition in that position not a kid wet behind his ears, it would enhance Meslier's career whose confidence must have been shot at times last season.

and his wages ? Casilla is the back up right now, hardly wet between the ears and MOTM last time he started

His weekly salary is the issue. They would have to hose money at him to persuade him that sitting on a bench at a lower table club is a good move in a WC year.

Well that thought feeds me with the utmost confidence  lets hope Meslier features in all 38 games next season then.

Casilla has been good a lot more times than he's been bad. Lets not forget it was Cooper's error not Kiko's that cost us v Derby. There have been a couple more incidences but no worse than Meslier who's errors probably cost us 4/5 goals last season. Kiko is a better shot stopper in my opinion. Meslier better on set pieces. Pope had a good season so unlikely to repeat that form next

Imagine not signing Salah, Messi, Jota, etc because we already have Patrick Bamford

It's a coin toss, a 10M plus wages coin toss.. Meslier had to perform behind a different defence every week, not sure the same could be said for Pope plus tbh I didn't see every Burnley game last season.. I'm sure he made mistakes. I'm also wondering why with all the great players they have, better than ours apparently, they got relegated..

Pope would have been a great signing for us.

Southampton had Alex McCartney,Fraser Foster and Angus Gunn at one point.

Newcastle now have Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka and Karl Darlow.

It's not uncommon to have 2 genuine number 1 quality goalkeepers.

I'd have taken Pope for £10mil over Meslier id also take Dubravka.

Burnley had the 10th best defence there problem was at the other end.

Nick Pope was brilliant for them last season especially near the end of the season.

Similar to Pickford at Everton.

Both of them were brilliant.

Burnley were playing without their two main CBs in five of their last six games, defence wasn't their problem, lack of scoring goals was the reason they were relegated.

Burnley have four decent players worth consideration, three now.

But both played behind settled defences ... there's really no proof either of theses are so much better than Meslier

The Leeds mentality, Cjay.

So we have a problem with our injury-prone defence?

Maybe not so much better but as purely goalkeepers making saves and commanding areas I'd say Nick Pope is.

Had a higher save percentage than Meslier last season as well.

Not knocking Msslierhe was badly exposed last season but imo Pope would have been worth an extra few points.

As we are getting carried away plucking names from thin air, frankly I'd rather Donnarumma as back up.

But just like Nick Pope, he has given no indication that he wants to come to Leeds, there is no suggestion Leeds could meet his wage expectations to stick him on the bench, and it's really just idle speculation.
