The LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wed 7th Nov)

Post by Ellandback1 » Wed Nov 07, 2018 8:03 am

Good Morning Everyone

Where are Leeds at their most vulnerable?

Amazingly, Leeds have only conceded four goals from open play in 16 matches, fewer than any other side in the Championship!

What about set pieces I hear you ask?

9 out of the remaining 13 goals Leeds have conceded have come from set-pieces!

Does that surprise you?

Where does the problem lay?

Is it a height issue?

Are set pieces a weakness of Peacock Farrell?

Whilst we are talking about statistics, just take a look at how much we dominated Wigan at the weekend...

Possession: 32%-68%

Touches: 477-727

Pass Accuracy: 54%-79%

Attacking Third Passes: 44-115

Shots: 6-12

Loss of Possession: 33-23

Successful Passes: 148-421

Ball Recoveries: 50-61

Crosses: 10-18

Tackles: 22-31

Bearing these stats in mind, shouldn't we be winning by a more comfortable margin?

Very interesting comment from Bielsa regarding injuries the other day :-

"We are the team with the least injuries in the Championship.

We protect the players. If you factor players used by injuries, we are low.

Muscular injuries are the result of burn-out but that is not the case with our injuries."

Championship players must be dropping like flies!!!

I don't think that we have a particular weakness. Yes most of our goals conceded have been from set pieces, but that doesn't necessarily mean that we are weak at defending set pieces, it could simply mean that we are very good at controlling open play. Our defensive record is still very good.

Watching our games I feel for more confident when we conceded corners or free-kicks in like positions than I have in many years.
We're going up like there is no gravity!

Like Harry, I'm more confident when we are defending now than for many a year, teams concede goals, that's football. if I had to pick out why we are conceding more from set pieces than open play then it would be the lack of height, as so many of the goals seem to be headers.

We generally only concentrate on our own problems with injuries but most teams get them, it's just we don't realise until perhaps we play that team, like Wigan were without 4 key players Sunday, wouldn't have known that unless we played them.

I do feel we are a victim of our earlier games, as in victim from too much criticism from our own fans, there was very little chance we could continue the way we played against Stoke, Derby etc, other teams were going to stifle us, but some seem to think we are failing because of this, given the fact where we are to where most of us thought we'd be, we really should have little to moan about.
Having said that healthy discussion on ways of improving the team and squad isn't an issue, you should always look to improve, no matter who you are.

Morning All,

Interesting stat regarding how we have conceded goals.
I'm sure they spend a lot of time on the training ground practicing defending against set pieces but at some point the opposition will score no matter how well you defend.

Not at all surprised by the Wigan stats, it was a dominant performance throughout.

Hmmm...not sure where MB got his facts about us having less injuries than all other teams in the championship?
I honestly can't decide whether it's down to the training methods or pure bad luck. I think it's the latter......
Certainly in the case of Luke Ayling it was the result of a full blooded tackle.

Good morning Matt & everyone

Height is an issue as we only have two big man men who are good in the air but contrary to some fans I know I think we are defending very well, the stats prove we are !

Interesting point Bielsa makes about other clubs have their injury problems

I still believe if we lose Cooper, Jansson or Phillips we'll have a problem. It is already proven we struggled without the likes of Hernandez, Roofe & Douglas. Our back-up is not great by any means.
Dallas had a decent game v Wigan but he didn't have a decent winger constantly running at him, that's another area which is a major concern for me !

7 points from our last 3 games with Pablo & Roofe back in the team as oppose to 5 points in the previous 5 games without them

We lack height imo, feel we needed to add more height in the summer, still do.

BPF doesnt help either.

Its a concern especially considering the best side in the air statistically winning more aerial duels then any other side is WBA.

We should be winning more comfortably, but as long as we win i dont care.

Draws have been the issue and the stats say they should have been wins in the main.

Hopefully we can get a win on Saturday and go into another stupid international break on a high.

Some of them, we have had to battle hard to get a point (Millwall) but others (ie Sheffield Wednesday) we should have buried them.

Agree on the stats thing. Keeping the ball is one thing but having 70% of the ball and not scoring then conceding a set piece is hopeless!
I think we have weathered the bad run and are back. Playing WBA away rather than home will suit as well
My my my, such a lot of guns around town and so few brains

they can be revealing , but often cover up the essentials
