Re: Album Club Review - ???

Post by Sara »

I thought I was a fan of James, but I haven't listened to anything after Laid. That was a 5 star album for me, and I've played it to death, so I'm not sure why I stopped there. Gold Mother is another fave.

I first came across them when I was living in Glastonbury in the 80s. They were on in the town somewhere, but it was 3 quid and I'd never heard of them, so I didn't bother. Always regretted that. I wouldn't call them britpop, and don't really get that association. Interested to see what Millionaires is like. I rate Tim Booth as a lyricist, but I didn't know he was a Leeds fan.

What can you say about Let It Bleed? It's classic Stones, with two of their best songs. That said, I never actually listen to it anymore, so I'll give it 4.5.

Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed.

Classic album, with 3 of their best songs on it. 5 :star: :star: :star: :star: :star:

James - Millionaires.

One of my all time favourite live bands, must have seen them a dozen times at least, Laid is one of my favourite albums but then it all gets a bit cloudy, Goldmother, Seven and Whiplash are good albums, with the great tracks, being brilliant, the rest very meh, after Whiplash their albums are pretty poor in my opinion, inc Millionaires, unfortunately their live performances now are mainly songs from these albums, with the odd classic, the show December last year will probably be my last, as I just don't enjoy the setlist anymore.

This album sums up what to me is the Stones sound is more than any other and is my favourite Stones album (with Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! a pretty close second).
Probably my favourite live album of all-time

Ok, Millionaires. It's not a bad record, but it's verging on James-by-numbers for me. I much prefer their melancholy and introspective side to the sing alongs anyway, so the more commercial they become the less interested I am. Even the more thoughtful songs on this album didn't really make me want to listen to them more than once. It's a career trajectory for so many bands, to do a handful of fine albums, and then spend decades trying to recapture the original spark. I'd say James were definitely losing it by this point. Can't give it a 3, but their inherent quality just lifts it above a 2.

Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed

let me start by saying that I am not a fan of the Stones.....

However, I liked this album, have always thought Midnight Rambler was one of their good songs, and I did like the Country Honk song.....

so from me an unexpected

Thank you Hector for giving a decent vote to one of the greatest bands in existence

You'd probably enjoy their live album 'Get Yer Ya Ya's Out' then, one of their best too

Glad to see that at least one choice is doing better than my two nominations in the first round.

Although, maybe LiB was a bit of a ‘safe’ choice, albeit the Stones are not everyone’s cup of tea.

The Rolling Stones 'Let it Bleed'

LET IT BLEED finds the Stones have finally assimilated their blues, country & early rock and roll influences and were now blending them in their own unique and special way. Their mastery is so refined that it is very difficult to decide whether some of these songs contain more of one style than another. Every song here is amazing and there is no mediocrity to be found. This is when the Rolling Stones truly became the band that we know and love today.

James 'Millionaires'

Never been a fan of James, Millionaires has it's moments too few for me though

I can't get hold of a copy of the James album in any format, so will have to decline ratings for it..

Unless you want me to rate it on the only James song I have heard and hate :) :)

They are mate, infact out of the dozen or times I've seen them the only one I thought they were poor, was at a festival, the sound was awful, infact they didn't do an encore, as they were obviously pissed with the sound themselves.
