Talking of young Spaniards, I'd love us to go in for Oscar Rodriguez on loan from Real Madrid as a replacement/cover for Pablo. Look at these beauties.
Re: 2019/20 Transfer Rumours & Discussion Thread
Jesus christ Paddy and Roofe.
Also worth noting none of the top 6 aside from us had any, we had 2.

Re: 2019/20 Transfer Rumours & Discussion Thread
In some ways it is like the Andy Cole situation. He would need lots of chances to score but because he was so good at getting into the right positions he would get more chances than most strikers and as such would be at the top end of the top scorers chart.
For me the problem still lies with the contribution from other players when it came to goalscoring. For example Ayling found himself in some great positions to score but his technique in front of goal is completely lacking and he has no composure. If you contrast his output, goals wise, with that of Alioski playing at left wing back, or even Stuart Dallas then it is totally lacking. Similarly Harrison got in some great positions but didn't score as many as he should. Tyler Roberts scored none from the no10 position, as did Saiz earlier on in the season - and you really need to be looking at 10 to 15 goals from that position.

Totally agree re Ayling, Harrison and Roberts lack of goal contribution.
Also Bamford, and especially Roofe, seeming to have 'wasteful' stats simply because they were so good at getting into goal scoring positions. I could easily see both scoring 20+ if they stay fit.
Need more goals from across the team, definitely. A quality no 10 and winger would be a priority for me.

Re: 2019/20 Transfer Rumours & Discussion Thread
I think 25 per season for a striker is a very good return and we got 28 from our three in one over the 47 games. We also got 22 from Pablo and Klich which is excellent, Alio probably would have made double figures had he stayed the whole season on the wing ...Harrison got 5 first season which is tolerable return, he'd double that if he returned imo..
So I don't think goals are the issue..Cardiff got promoted with their high scorer getting 10. Where we lost it was in defence, teams needed justone chance to score it seemed and we never got a balanced, consistent back 4. Defensive partnerships take time to form. We lost every defender at least once through the season, that lead to fill ins playing a lot of games and that way defensive c**k up ensue
We got beat by bad luck and errors in judgement this season, not quality of player
We do need a better captain imo...

Take your point about defence, and leadership on the pitch. Who would you make captain? Klich? Phillips?

Sam Gallagher from Southampton is being released, could there be a double
swoop for him and McCarthy in goal.

I would have said Klich but he's a little too laid back..That can work but I think we need a sgt major. That's PJ for me now

Re: 2019/20 Transfer Rumours & Discussion Thread
You don't really want the teams most popular player as a captain, he's not there to be a mate. There's a great book examining great captains in "dynasty" teams..That author concludes the great captains are not the best player on the pitch, happy to question their manager. Bullish and he even says that they should get into hot water every now and again...A good captain absolutely will get in trouble with the authorities
Several years ago, Sam Walker set out to answer one of the most hotly debated questions in sport: what are the greatest teams of all time? He devised a formula and applied it to thousands of teams across the world from the English Premier League to the NFL. When he was done, he had a list of the 16 most dominant teams ever. At that point he became obsessed with another, more complex question: what did these freak teams have in common?
As Walker dug more deeply, a pattern emerged: The teams were all driven by a singular type of leader, but not one with the characteristics you might expect. They were unorthodox outliers – awkward and disagreeable, marginally skilled, poor verbal communicators, at times aggressive and rule-breaking and, rather than pursue fame, they preferred to hide in the shadows both on and off the field. Captains, in short, who will challenge your assumptions of what inspired leadership looks like.
From the captains of world renowned teams like Barcelona, Brazil, the All Blacks and the New York Yankees to lesser known successes of Soviet ice hockey or French handball, The Captain Class unveils the seven key qualities that make these elite leaders exceptional. Drawing on original interviews with athletes from two dozen countries as well as coaches, managers and others skilled at building teams, Walker attempts to answer questions such as: Are great captains made or born? Why do so many teams pick the wrong captain? Why has the value of the captain fallen out of favour and how can it be revived? The culmination of 10-years research and a lifetime of sports watching, The Captain Class is like no other sports book and is guaranteed to spark endless debate and heated argument among fans of every sport

Would disagree about our need for goals. If we score more goals it takes pressure of the defence because we aren't at 0-0 or 1-0, it also means mistakes at the back aren't as crucial. If we are 3-0 up and someone makes an error we win 3-1, at 0-0 we lose 1-0. The main reason we lost to teams like QPR, Ipswich, Wigan and others is because we didn't score or only scored 1. Up until Wigan (and then Derby) we won every match where we went in front - going in front allowed us to dictate how we wanted to play and stopped us getting so stretched at the back and as such less mistakes. Nothing worse as a player than dominating a match and then the opposition take the lead through a mistake - it complete knocks the wind out of you.faaip wrote: ↑Thu May 30, 2019 10:48 am I think 25 per season for a striker is a very good return and we got 28 from our three in one over the 47 games. We were probably 20 goals shy of what we should have scored, we probably also conceded 10 more than we should have done. That combination saw us lose matches when we shouldn't have. Like you I am happy with our strikers, like you say their combined total was excellent and if they stay fit they will likely both do better, especially if we also have the option of bringing one on as a sub too - a luxury we rarely got last season. I could see them both scoring 20 even if we play with just 1 striker.

You always need more goals ..the more games we can score 4 in the better. But those are very decent season totals all round except from the number 10.. I'd imagine Klich's 10 is high up the list of centre mids

So £5mil is a start i suppose, but surely we can raise some selling the less wanted players.
Saiz-2-3mil (legalities permitting).
Ekuban-2mil
Sacko did ok in Turkey 1mil
Cibicki did ok in Sweden 500k-1mil
Connor Shockednessie-250k
Tyler Denton 250k
Sam Dalby 200k
Vurnon Anita 500k
Lewie Coyle £500k
De Bock 250-500k
O'Kane 250k
Ideguchi 300k
O'Connor 250k
Then imo i think Berardi will go to Brescia for maybe £1mil.
Even at the lower end of the estimates thats just under £9mil and the valuations dont seem unreasonable.
If we could get £3mil for Saiz instead of 2 that puts us at a nice round £10mil and probably £100k a week saved.
This should be our number 1 priority, some of them have a good pedigree even if they didnt show it for us like Anita, O'Kane, De Bock, surely we can raise some funds this way?

Ekuban - the deal looks closer to £1m. Sacko £1m - that won't happen. The likes of Denton, Anota, O'Kane will likely go for nowt. I think we'd have done amazing to get £5m.

2 new names to add to the list.
Swedish media report that we will have 2 scouts in Sweden today to watch Ostersunds with midfielder Hosam Aiesh and striker Dino Islamovic the two targets.

According to Calcio Mercato Benfica want Jansson. We couldn't really stand in his way for a move like that, but he would be so hard to replace. I wouldn't trust Orta to replace him well.
