It is a shirt from the modern era that is leading our favourite Leeds United shirt poll but there is one decade that stands out above all others in terms of votes. The 1970s! Every shirt worn by Leeds United during that era has gained a significant amount of votes.
The decade started with Leeds wearing the classic all white strip with owl badge, a kit we began wearing in 1964 and wore right through until 1971. Despite Don Revie’s supposed superstitions about birds it is a kit that brought us much success; First Division champions in 1969, runners up in 1965, 1966, 1970 and 1971. FA Cup runners up in 1965 and 1970 and League Cup winners in 1968. We also won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1968 and 1971 and were runners up in 1967.
Next up was the LUFC script kit worn from 1971-1973 and rejuvenated for the 1995-1996 season. Only worn for a couple of seasons it will go down in history as the kit in which we won our only FA Cup in 1972. We were also runners up in 1973, the same year we were Cup Winners Cup runners-up. In stark contrast to the classic script we then had the smiley badge. Modern and quirky it brought us a First Division Championship in 1974 and featured in our infamous European Cup final of 1975.
So what was it about those 70s shirts that make them so loved? Was it the great players, the success? Leeds United were undoubtedly at the peak of their powers but there is something special about those kits. Pristine all white mirroring the all-conquering Real Madrid team, unadulterated by sponsors logos, uncluttered by trim apart from a blue sock tag flapping in the breeze. They were classic Leeds United.
