The #LUFC Breakfast Debate (Wed 24th Apr)
Good Morning Everyone
Carlos Corberan's under 23's crashed out of the Premier League Cup yesterday at the semi final stage at the hands of Newcastle Utd.
Two goals in four minutes early in the second half, courtesy of a penalty and a loose back pass from Hassanyeh effectively killed the tie off for the Whites.
To rub salt into the wound, the Barcodes added a third in the closing stages!
This was the third time this season that the teams had met with honours even up until yesterday!
It looks like Bielsa rested Phillips, in favour of recalling Forshaw just so Phillips could play in the U23's semi final!
Had Phillips played on Saturday, would you have expected a different result?
Following the Brentford debacle, Noel Whelan was very quick to point the finger IN Pontus Jansson's direction.
Speaking to the YEP, Whelan said “The defence has been all over the place and Jansson, he’s been part of the problem.”
“Suddenly, we look disjointed and vulnerable,”
“Jansson was wrong side and ball watching for the second Wigan goal and for Maupay’s goal.
“It was schoolboy defending. Liam Cooper was a massive miss against Wigan but he played against Brentford and his return didn’t have the effect everyone would have hoped.”
Agree?

Forshaw played as well as Phillips has been playing of late. No single player - in our squad - would have mad a difference against Brentford. None of the players played well enough in the second half after a pretty good first half. Once they scored and we didn't get an early reply in the second half we panicked. Just as we did against Wigan.
Speaking of silly play, the next player who tries a fancy back heel for no reason and causes us to lose possession, should be subbed immediately.
The defending for the two Brentford goals was poor, Poor marking for the first, and a poor attempted clearance for the second. But it still took the Brentford players to do the proper thing to score, they took their chances well.

Un Marcelo Bielsa, solo hay un Marcelo Bielsa. Gracias Marcello. Marsching on together.

Forshaw was probably stand out for most of the game, but just bizarre for me that Phillips played U23's...that must have impacted their balance too.

Phillips
I love Kalvin, one of our major pluses of the season however I don't think his inclusion in the team would have made much difference as there were too many players sadly out of form
Jansson
Big admirer of Pontus but he was really poor v Wigan & Brentford, shame as this was a period when our experienced players needed to stand up to the plate

If that's the case shame we place more importance on winning a U23's semi-final than going for automatic promotion to the premiership, surely not !Ellandback1 wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 6:52 am It looks like Bielsa rested Phillips, in favour of recalling Forshaw just so Phillips could play in the U23's semi final!

Agree Harry
I was fuming with the showboating that contributed to our downfall v Wigan, 48 hours later we are still trying to be fancy dans, they need to cut these traits out of their game. Yes it looks good when it comes off but we are not Barcelona or Man City

Yet there were all the PJ Gifs lauding Pontus almost losing control while executing a trick turn. When we're winning everyone loves them, when we're losing they must stop.

Fair point. Showboating when you're 4 nil up is one thing, but you have to kill off the game first. I believe all these negative factors in our season, from conversion rate to the arrogance you've mentioned, are down to a lack of killer intent. When we play well - Derby, Reading, West Brom at home etc - we've looked mentally up for it and unafraid of the opposition.
I just don't understand how they can look so confident one week and devoid of it the next, to go from lions to chickens in so short a space of time.
Makes me wonder what's going on behind the scenes, honestly.

Morning Harry, I think the problem is Hernandez is knackered, and when our talisman doesn't play well, the rest of the team don't.HarryofOz wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 7:09 am Yo EB

Evening pal, we're getting torn apart with every break from the opposition...1964white wrote: ↑Wed Apr 24, 2019 8:54 am Phillips
