Re: Album Club Review - Who's next to nominate two albums ?
Judging by the sell out world tours where he has at times included entire albums in his set. Not many.
On his last "River" tour he used 143 songs from his past catalogue.

Is this because he can't stand to sing the same song twice??
or the fans can't stand to hear them again?
It would be a boring world if we all liked the same crap

Re: Album Club Review - Talk Talk 'Spirit of Eden'/Calexico 'Algiers' (Sara)
Joking of course, I'd imagine the intenseness of the current situation has everyone on edge....also the Calexico as an album is completely new to me, up to now I've had pretty firm pre-existing opinions I've only had to flick through to re-confirm. Calexico are good enough for me to dig deeper, I can often get a good instinct on one playing but once in a blue moon I need to listen harder..
I already like the likes of Wilco, Silversun Pickups, Lambchop and of course the likes of The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers who could also wear the tag Alt country, so I'm halfway there

What faaip says.
Been in a mood since Friday but will post a pre review...
Calexico. I can see what they are trying to do but so far I haven't felt engaged. It seems a bit "all over the place" Nothing do far has lifted me up. Or made me think.
Saying that it has been a tough weekend.
However. Talktalk I'm really liking this. Nice atmospherics. I don't get it yet but apart from the guitar sound on Eden. to me they have replaced their strings with barbed wire and haven't even tuned them...
Singer reminds me of Steve Hogarth.

Re: Album Club Review - Talk Talk 'Spirit of Eden'/Calexico 'Algiers' (Sara)
Well, I had to listen to the Manic Street Preachers and Bruce effing Springsteen, so I'm holding firm.
Both albums are growers, so I don't think anyone's likely to get it just by flicking through. Obviously, for me, they're worth the effort, but you can't force these things.
As for the guitar sound on Eden, I love it; it's the reason I bought a Gretsch. The dynamic range, straight into an old Fender amp, is awesome, from the subtlest clean through to melted barbed wire, as you say, just from the touch of your fingers.
I already know the Barr Brothers. It's not the musical style so much as the songwriting and the use of space that I love in both of these bands. Any art, for me, also has to speak from the gritty despair of the mundane, and lift it to another level through the beauty of creative expression. The poignant and the bittersweet are the points where human experience finds its deepest truths imo.

Talk Talk - Spirit Of Eden
This really is a mood album for me, if I'm not in the mood, it sounds as though it's just 6 songs rolled into 1, when I'm in the right mood, it plays out into a musical masterpiece. You really have to have the time to sit and listen, not something to have on in the background. A minor gripe for me is, I don't enjoy the 2 minute build up for the album to get going, for others I appreciate this is what gives the album its mood.
4/5

Played Calexico for the first time this morning, will give it at least 2 more plays before comment.

Talk Talk 'Sprit Of Eden'
The record is an intense listen marked by beauty and abrasion, and a sparseness that is both intimate and expansive, their combination of jazz, classical, rock and the spacey echoes of dub, using silence almost as an instrument in its own right, lends itself to the vernacular of post-rock
'Spirit Of Eden' is far removed from their previous commercial albums, it did not sell nearly as many as Talk Talk’s earlier successes yet with time, it has become a cult classic.
A masterclass, absolutely gorgeous from start to finish
The last Mark Hollis is a genius in my mind
