Bielsa's Babes

Was reading earlier about the managers Bielsa has influenced.

Its pretty incredible really.

We all know about Pep Guardiola and his admiration for Bielsa.

And Mauricio Pochettino

Diego Simeone.

Tata Martino ex Barcelona manager

Unai Emery the Arsenal boss.

Antonio Conte.

Zinedine Zidane

And lesser known in Europe but ex Argentina midfielder Marcelo Gallardo who has won numerous trophies in Argentina.

And finally Matias Almeyda another ex international who has created quite a reputation for himself in South America.

Quite amazing when you think how many trophies that group has won and all of them have credited Bielsa as a major influence.

I'm still hoping he's going to add Leeds United to his list.
Maybe not this season but next??

Self confessed Bielsa disciple Marcelo Gallardo is leaving River Plate after 8.5 years in December.

Gallardo is the most successful coach in the proud history of River Plate with multiple League titles and trophies to his name.

If we struggle until the World Cup break and decide to sack Marsch (I very much doubt it) then surely Gallardo would be onthe list?

Tata Martino is the one we should chase if Jesse gets the sack. He will be finished with Mexico after the World Cup. Great pedigree including Barca. And worked wonders with Atlanta United in MLS winning everything. I think our current squad would flourish under him.

Would certainly appear to be someone who would fit into the way we play, and used to play. Interesting that at Barca he merged the high pressing game with Barca's cultural tika taka style which suggests he can see how players are best suited to play rather than just tyring to make them play his way regardless of whether the players at his disposal are best suited to play that way - also to how Cjay suggests the Bielsa inspired coaches who have had most success have taken large parts of the Bielsa way and mixed them with their own ideas.

Only area of concern would be that he seems to have had short spells in charge then moved on several times - although Bielsa had done similar. He has however left for other jobs rather than being sacked and generally done fairly well and got the teams doing better than previously. It is hard to judge his year at Barca as they finished 2nd and won the Super Cup - they won the title the year before Tata managed them and also the year after he left and also only reached the quarter final of the Champion's League under him having been semi finalists the year previously and winning it the year afterwards - also it has to be noted that Messi had an injury plagued year whilst he was there missing 12 matches scoring just 28 goals in comparison to 46 and 43 in the 2 seasons sandwiching Tata's reign. Messi missed just 3 matches in the season prior to Tata being in charge and 0 the season after Tata left.

I would definitely see him as a huge upgrade on Marsch and like the fact that when he took over Newells they were in relegation trouble and he steered them away and then also won them a league title (Argentina has a complicated way of winning titles though as they have sort of 2 seasons within a season).

Come on cjay....

Zidane visited a training session and maybe had a chat with bielsa...to give credit to bielsa for anything there is madness

Yes bielsa has a great reputation as a coach and coaches loves to learn from others and exchange ideas...I'm sure he had some influence on some of the names you listed but to give him the credit you're giving him here is mad.

Conte too...is there any link at all between the two except conte attending once a talk given by bielsa?! If I attend a talk at work from a specialist in a certain field am I then a disciple?

Maybe some of the others you've mentioned have garnered bits and pieces of influence and ideas from bielsa but that's it and normal in football between coaches!

I'm sure just as many have been influenced by what not to do from bielsa in the last season!

I was probably a bit generous with Zidane tbf being a Bielsa fan.

But Pep, Poch, Martino, Emery, Simeone, Gallardo and Almeyda have all gone public in naming Bielsa as a massive influence on them.

Pep called him his mentor
Poch his football father
Martino referred to himself as a Bielsa disciple
Gallardo called him one of the major influences
Emery named Pep, Simeone and Bielsa specifically as his influences.

All public quotes so think it's fair to say he was very influential for those Managers.

Obviously he isnt solely responsible for what they have achieved but he played a part.

It's normal to be influenced as you say Dan but people don't generally go out of there way to say how much you influenced them as they did with Bielsa.

Conte choose of his own back to fly half way round the world to watch Bielsa and listen to him speak.

Again I'd say that is going a bit above and beyond?

Conte also gave a long speech after Bielsa was sacked, calling him "a master" and praising his influence on coaches and football in general past and present.

I realise managers get asked these questions when others lose there jobs but Conte seemed again to go a bit above and beyond the usual paint by numbers response.

MB wasn't perfect by any means, but definitely a hugely influential figure in football and there isn't many of those.

If i could just spend a few hours with the master picking his brains, especially how he goes about getting shite players to play the football he does, i'm pretty sure i'd come away better for it.

Klopp - " WOW! "

One of the reasons is definitely - You need them as fit as a fiddle like you've 15 men on the field, but there's something a lot bigger than that in how he plays the beautiful confidence football that creates so many chances, that's what i'd try and get from him.

1 day is all a clever manager would need.

He's influential in that he has very clear, unique and passionate ideas about football. It's normal for people to be influenced or interested in someone. Potch even says he's not a follower of Bielsa's methods at all but just got influenced by his passion etc. β€œI am not a follower of him, I am not doing what he’s doing because it’s impossible, he’s unique but he can inspire me.” People get inspiration from lots of different sources.

Not saying Bielsa isn't influential, but to call them Bielsa's babes is so far wide of the mark imo sorry cjay
