Is Wiedwald a Key Player?

Post by Clive »

For all the hysteria and people calling him the worst keeper they've ever seen, is Felix Wieldwald actually a key player for us, are we much better with him?

The stats would suggest so.

We've had 10 games without him in which we won 2, drew 1 and lost 7, with just 1 clean sheet.

In the 28 games with him we won 12, drew 7 and lost 9, with 12 clean sheets.

Has our extensive Sky coverage highlighted his mistakes and made too much of an issue out of them, costing us an important player?

Needs a complete re-training. Learn how to catch, how to organise a defence, and work on his positioning. Also needs to get braver, seems to flinch too easily.

Maybe then in a season or two but can we wait.

He's not as bad as he's been painted, but neither is he good enough for a team with promotion ambitions. With a year's experience of the Championship, he might come good, but can we afford to wait for that to happen?

He is a prat in a key position.

Behind a rubbish defence.

If Celtic did not have a more than decent keeper behind a dodgy defence, then, they would be in big trouble.

But I've seen enough of Weidwald to at least have that side right, as it stands. Wiedwald may well become a good player but he's behind BPF in development it seems

Part of the problem with the defence is that it hasn't been settled for any substantial part of the season. The entire back 5 need to be comfortable with each others' game and build an understanding. When the personnel are changing constantly, that doesn't happen. I think if Felix had a set, he could be a decent keeper. But, for me, he lacks bottle and is afraid of getting hurt. Can you coach that into him? Not sure

Key player? Lock the door behind you when leaving...being a nice guy not good enough.

That`s the worst possible situation...doubt he`ll ever become a good keeper.

He tries to punch when he should catch and he flaps at crosses, he puts the defence on edge and they don't trust him. In his favour his throw outs and kicks are amongst the best I have seen from a Leeds keeper for a long long time. Last years defence in front of him and he would have looked better than he is. I prefer him over Lonergan, we are missing his distribution from the back but you can't pick a keeper who makes so many mistakes, the opposition know how weak he is at crosses and they just pepper us when he is between the sticks.

Felix, Lonergan, PBF - If any of those three are starting in goal next season then we are not aiming for top 6 and the money has dried up.

I definitely don't think he is bad as people make out but equally he is not good enough at the basics that you need in English football. No real sign of any improvements over the season so no real suggestion that he can get better at the aspects of his game he is weak on. Definitely there is the need for a new no1 next season although happy to see BPF given the rest of the season so that we can form a clearer opinion of him.

I think he's from the German equivalent of Lisburn so no.

A key player?! I don’t care if the guy is Messi with his feet, he is seriously lacking in some key goalkeeping skills. He clearly has ability but since heck came in his confidence dropped like a rock and is nothing more than a liability.

I'm not sure what abilities he clearly has, he doesn't even look much of a shot stopper. BPF is only an inch taller but he looks massive compared to Weidwald. Optical illusion or does Weidwald make himself smaller ?

If we go into next season with either Felix/BPF/Lonergan as our first choice keeper it will just go to show the ambition of our owners

Prepare yourselves for a relegation battle :(

Goalkeeper is a key position yet Leeds don't have a decent senior keeper,
that must be rectified in the summer if they want to be a team challenging for promotion
