Are Leeds on cusp of historic Premier League return?

Every passing year in the Football League calendar brings with it an abundance of hope and expectations from Leeds United fans, as they long for an awaited return to the big time of the Premier League.

The Yorkshire side were sickeningly relegated from the top-flight way back in the 2003/2004 campaign after a host of financial troubles within the club.

Ever since that dismal downfall the fans have been hopeful of a quick return, but it's now been nearly 15 years since they graced the Premier League. But this season has brought to light a new sense of belief, mainly thanks to imposing presence of esteemed manager Marco Bielsa at the helm.

The Argentine tactician is a highly regarded coach in the footballing world and he has instilled a great belief within his current crop of Leeds players that this could in fact be their year at last.

So will Leeds be able to maintain their strong surge and join the likes of Manchester City, who are 3/1 favourites with William Hill to win the Champions League, next term in the top-flight?





Bielsa is confident he can oversee that achievement and cement himself in the club's folklore by doing so.

Leeds are currently sitting in a promising position in The Championship standings, with their impressive attacking style of play having seen them rise to a play-off place at the moment.

Although, it is a highly interesting and extremely close race for promotion, as it always is in such a testing and demanding division in the Football League.

Leeds are presently in third place, behind only league leaders Norwich City and Northeast outfit Middlesbrough in the standings. One point separates them from Boro, while Bielsa's men are also only ahead of fellow Yorkshire club Sheffield United on goal difference, with West Bromwich Albion breathing down their necks as well.





But the Lily Whites do have plenty of momentum on their side, not to mention one of the most widely revered coaches in world football to help oversee a potentially historic campaign. Ask any Leeds fan now if they would take a play-off position come the end of the term and they would likely say yes.

But Bielsa's men are on the cusp of a famous automatic Championship promotion back to the Premier League if they can maintain their recent form and dig deep throughout the remainder of the current campaign.

There's obviously a long way still to go for the Yorkshire team, but with Bielsa overseeing a closely knitted group of players, anything is possible this term.

Securing a return after 14 years to the top tier of English football would undoubtedly see Bielsa become an instant legend and hero at Elland Road. There have been many, many coaches who have tried hard but ultimately come up short in their bid to oversee such a daunting task, but Bielsa seemingly looks up to the task this season in the second tier.

Leeds fans are always hopeful and confident but this season's prospects look all the more encouraging. Watch this space.
